Primary Role



Responsible for leading the financial planning and analysis activities for American Water’s regulated and other business; delivering timely and accurate forward-looking revenue, customer and usage forecasting / analysis. Supports the Operations Finance related to monthly analysis and business plan, Regulatory Services and/or Regulatory Operations related to rate cases and filings with special emphasis on revenue modelling / analysis as well as usage and customer forecasting. The person must have an advanced ability to communicate financial analysis, results, forecasts and projections to all levels within the organization from Operations to Executive Leadership.

The ideal candidate can sit out of either our Camden, NJ, Lexington, KY, Belleville, IL or Greenwood, IN locations.





Key Accountabilities




  • Provide monthly, quarterly and annual revenue analysis and identify key revenue variance drivers

  • Prepare and analyze monthly accrual of unbilled revenues

  • Responsible for annual revenue forecast, collaborate with business partners to develop budget assumptions.

  • Provide analytical support to all levels of management, including ad-hoc reporting

  • Develop financial and usage models using regression analysis and/or other statistical methods

  • Support preparation of rate case filings specific to revenues

  • Support other stakeholder special projects and ad hoc assignments

  • May supervise Financial Analysts and support, develop or mentor team members

  • Drive "Best Practices" by assessing ongoing effectiveness of existing business applications and technologies

  • Collaborates with affiliated Operational Finance teams, operations representatives and other key stakeholders to deliver effective analysis of results (plan, forecast and actuals)




Knowledge/Skills




  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proven financial analysis and modeling skills

  • Ability to apply complex trend evaluation and scenario modeling techniques

  • Ability to recommend and implement process improvements, work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships within finance and all levels of management

  • Utilize highly effective listening and feedback skills to promote open and constructive dialogue with stakeholders

  • Proven ability to learn concurrently, multitask, productively manage time and comfortable with a fast-paced environment

  • Prior experience in the utility industry is preferred (not required)

  • Advanced MS Excel and PowerPoint skills; General MS Office Suite capable (Word, Visio)

  • Knowledge/Experience of SAP and/or Hyperion is preferred (not required)

  • Accounting concepts and understanding of analytical concepts for financial analysis as well as US GAAP accounting practices




Experience/Education




  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • MBA, MS-Econ, CPA, CFA or advanced degrees preferred

  • Minimum of approximately 6-8 years of pertinent FP&A experience required (or relevant experience)
