Job Description:

ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
$20.59-$26.68/hr.


The City of Parlier is seeking applications for a full time Animal Control Officer.

DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Parlier Police Department: Performs animal control functions (animal regulations enforcement; animal care and adoption; licensing; capture and release of wild animals); and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbent works independently and with minimal supervision. Incumbent reports to on duty patrol sergeant for duties and instruction in matters which do not conform to established instruction, policy, or procedure.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Conducts a wide variety of animal control related operations; including but not limited to:
Investigating and enforcing state and local animal regulations
Investigates, reports, and documents animal bites
Testify in Court hearings
Investigates animal nuisances
Barking
Animal cruelty complaints
Transports animals to and from animal kennel
To veterinarian
To headquarters
Vaccinates animals as needed
Cleans and feeds animals at animal kennel
Keep daily activity logs
Report to Fresno County Environmental Health-Rabies Control

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATE REQUIRED

Possession of a valid California class ‘C’ driver’s license and a good driving record.

Successful completion of P.O.S.T. 832 P.C. course within six months of hire.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
City, county, and state regulations, municipal codes, animal laws
Animal care including disease and illness
Administration of vaccinations
Basic computer operations
Report writing system
Radio use
Web-related documenting programs
Ability to:
• Read, understand, and apply moderately difficult materials
• Understand policies and procedures and apply them without immediate supervision
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
• Be involved in the euthanasia of animals
The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable


EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
Education:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
AA/AS Degree-is desirable
PC832 Powers of Arrest & Firearms is desirable

Experience:
At least 1 year of practical work experience in the care and handling of domestic, agricultural, or wild animals is desirable
Previous experience in the customer service field is preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Strength: Medium work: Lifting, carrying and/or pushing 60 lbs. with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

Immediately following the filing deadline, hopefuls who meet the minimum requirements will be scheduled an oral interview. Reference checks, Live Scan, a background investigation, and medical examination and drug testing are part of the employment process. An initial and final interview will be held with the Police Chief prior to appointment.
