Wyman-Gordon is a worldwide supplier to the aerospace and industrial gas turbine markets. Location Profile



Located in South Gate, California, Shultz Steel operates the most modern vertically integrated forging facility in the aerospace industry. Shultz Steel offers a wide range of impression forgings, including some of the largest and most complex available - and they have an unsurpassed line of open die forgings. Shultz Steel is capable of producing seamless rolled rings up to 26 feet in diameter. The operation uses all major alloys including titanium, vacuum melt high strength and stainless steels, nickel and cobalt; and aluminum (rings only).








Position Summary



Creates monitors and troubleshoots forging and die designs and processes. Provides guidance and receives feedback from shop personnel. The focus is on quality, and productivity while coordinating activities with Forge, Metallurgy, Quality and Manufacturing by performing the following duties.







Primary Duties & Responsibilities



Provides guidance and instructions on the shop floor as necessary to facilitate the efficient operation of the forge units.


Looks for opportunities and executes process improvements based on real time observations and feedback.


Has an extensive knowledge of the concepts and standards used in part and process design with attention to potential lack of fill, defect formation, mismatch and die failure.


Communicates production issues effectively to the forge crew, supervision, management and customers.


Directs the die designers in the design and modification of tools based on observation, feedback and experience.


Participates in the estimation process.


Performs area, volume and weight calculations.


Participates in the creation of detailed operation sequence and Standard Work documentation necessary for the production process.


Creates drawings, sketches, templates and other documents and devices to aid in the production process.


Has general knowledge of the techniques, hardware and software used to inspect forgings and dies.


Performs simple inspection procedures to dimensionally check dies and forgings.







Experience & Education



Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires extensive experience in and high level of expertise in forging processing/ tool design.
