Education and Experience

Associate degree with a focus in science required. Certification in either CCI or ARDMS for pediatric echocardiography is required. For recent graduates of pediatric sonographer school, certification in either CCI or ARDMS for pediatric echocardiography is required within 6 weeks of completion of the school.


Associate's degree in Cardiovascular Technology. Registered with American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or Cardiovascular Credentialing International. A minimum of 6 months scanning experience in pediatric. Echocardiography program or has worked as a pediatric sonographer in another hospital base facility.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified as a registered adult Echocardiographer with either the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Within 6 weeks of hire the sonographer must have certification and be registered in pediatric echocardiography with either the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant required.

Job Description

Under limited supervision, performs ECHO procedures and complex diagnostic ultrasound procedures under


the supervision of a qualified physician for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Procedures include pediatric, neonatal, and transeseophageal.


ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES


CLINICAL PRACTICES


Performs patient assessments. Acquires and analyzes data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic



technologies. Provides a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management.


Uses independent judgment and systematic problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic


information and optimize patient care. Perform routine, complex, congenital defect guided and emergency


echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2- dimensional, doppler, and transesophageal, as requested by physician and in accordance with standard practices; use aseptic technique. Operates equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic recordings; utilize ancillary devices such as selected


transducers, audio- and video- recorders, computer systems, etc. Maintains confidentiality of patients,


employees, and corporation-related activities. Maintains equipment in working order, making minor


adjustments and repairs, performing routine cleaning and preventive maintenance; reports any equipment malfunction to department manager. Advises cardiologists of results of examination and provides preliminary diagnostic


evaluation.



QUALITY ASSURANCE


Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, quality assurance programs, and safety standards. Utilizes


all software and hardware systems which impacts overall department operations scorecard. Maintains equipment


in working order, making minor adjustments and repairs, performing routine cleaning and preventive


maintenance; reports any equipment malfunction to department manager.



PATIENT EDUCATION


Educates patient/family regarding echocardiography exam. Educates patient/family to explain the procedure and


reduce anxiety and to obtain patient cooperation.



DOUCMENTATION


Analyzes patient's medical record to obtain history of symptoms and necessary information for performance


of diagnostic procedures. Prepares patient records for review and interpretation by physician, including the selection, recording, cross-reference of significant or representative studies. Provides accurate documentation of patient care provided on appropriate forms, according to Connecticut Children's and department protocols.



Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific population from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers. Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the Connecticut Children's Standards.
