Position Summary

Retail Senior Lending Manager will have direct accountability for leading all Home Lending activities tied to Market Expansion. This manager will own the business, have significant impact on the business P/L, develop and execute against MB strategies, influence short and long term business and technical investments, and execute against controls and the regulatory environment. Responsible for hiring, recruiting and managing the Lending Managers and Home Lending Advisors required for Market Expansion success and for managing the partnership with Consumer Bank Market Expansion leadership.

Core Competencies


  • Business Ownership of P/L for Market Expansion - understand, guide, influence and execute against pricing, price exceptions, staffing and capacity planning, and general expense management
  • Relationship Management - represent Mortgage Banking with key Retail Bank Partners, Internal IT and Product Partners, Operations and UW Partners, External Lead Gen and Title Vendors, and Clients
  • Talent Management - recruit talent to meet staffing needs; recognize high potential employees; coach Lending Managers and Mortgage Bankers for career and/or personal development; creating diverse and cohesive teams; hold people accountable for excellence; promote an inclusive work environment.
  • Performance Management - monitor the quality and quantity of loan applications and closings; provide advice and counsel on how to best build the business and close loans; address performance issues promptly and positively; ensure compliance with requirements and regulations; review processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Strategic Thinking - maintain a broad perspective of the mortgage market and a long-term view of the customer and relationship; identifying opportunities in sales, staffing, and/or processes; developing a plan to leverage opportunities; visioning alternatives and options and their likelihood of success.
  • Mortgage Banking Expertise - Understand and apply mortgage offering and home lending guidelines in all 50 states; understand the credit and underwriting process in its entirety (pre-credit, post approval, and closing); be familiar with the diversity of Chase products/services and the advantages of each; understand the local market and the needs and priorities of the clients; keep current with the mortgage industry and business/economic trends; know how to use automated programs/software to support the lending process; and effectively handling "problem" applications and escalations
  • Think creatively to solve complex problems
  • Lead Source Ownership - guide identification, development, and implementation of new lead sources to drive Market Share growth

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (in order of importance)


  • Own/influence the P/L through solid understanding and management of Rates, Price Exceptions, Staffing, Planning, and Market Competition.
  • Own the business through development and execution against business plans; modify approach based on changing market conditions, identify growth opportunities
  • Ensure adequate resources to support growth and meet all hiring targets
  • Identify, guide, lead and influence short and long term strategies and technical investments such as Mortgage Express, Lead Generation, CRM, and Bank Branch Relationship models.
  • Execute against controls and the regulatory environment in all 50 states.
  • Lead and influence policy change that drives business and protects the firm
  • Act as primary contact with key Bank Leaders, Vendors, and Corporate Clients
  • Responsible for driving employee culture, satisfaction, and opportunities to improve each
  • Represent the business as the leader and subject matter expert
  • Maintain strong relationships with key partners in Operations and Underwriting, Marketing, Technology and have the ability to influence change in the broader business
  • Possess broad knowledge of the Banking Industry, trending topics, and technology advancements
  • Interact, present, communicate with all levels of the Mortgage Banking Senior Leadership team and executive committee
  • Ensure compliance with all state and national Audit and Regulatory requirements

Knowledge and Experience


  • Prefer 10-15 years of Mortgage Sales Experience
  • Prefer 5 years of Senior Leadership in Mortgage Sales and Operations
  • Prefer Strong Technical background
  • 7-10 years management experience managing a team of 3 or more Sr. Managers (mortgage banking industry preferred)
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and mentor at all position levels
  • Proven ability to manage large scale production operation
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Federal and State regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proven problem solving and analytical skills critical
  • Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to effectively interact with various styles and levels of management and be able to adjust own communication style as needed
  • Strong PC skills, including Excel, Work, PowerPoint
  • Ability to consistently maintain high performance level in stressful situations.
  • Travel requirements; ~ 50 travel

Unique Requirements


  • This position is subject to the Dodd Frank/Truth in Lending Act qualification requirements for Loan Originators. As such, an employment offer for this position is contingent on JPMC's review of your criminal conviction history, credit report, information available through NMLS, and any other information relevant to a determination by JPMC that you demonstrate financial responsibility, good character, and general fitness for the position. Note that any felony conviction within the last seven years will disqualify you from consideration for this position. Your continued employment in this position would be contingent upon compliance with Truth in Lending Act/Dodd Frank Loan Originator requirements.
  • In addition, this position requires National Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) registration under the SAFE Act of 2008.
