Job Description and Responsibilities
The Process Engineer is responsible for identifying opportunities for improving mill processes so that product quality and performance are improved. During process improvement activities, the Process Engineer is responsible for leading related efforts to include root cause assessment, statistical data analysis, process mapping, fishboning, trial planning and performance, and the development of real-time process control solutions. Collaboration with EVRAZ colleagues (hourly and management) both within the mill as well as outside subject matter experts will be needed in order to most effectively address issues and implement improvements. Also, executing or confirming process improvement efforts are implemented and properly documented in concise documentation so as to eliminate recurrence.
Address process control/product performance issues with a cross functional team by utilizing six sigma statistical tools and techniques to lead the group to a data driven solution
Identifies, leads needed data acquisition efforts, monitors and controls key mill process inputs (heating curves, quench recipes, etc.)
Ability to leverage various types of data systems to acquire data needed for analysis of process performance as well as addressing performance issues
Develops daily process KPI reports for feedback to operations consisting of conformance to key temperatures, loads/forces, speeds, etc.
Develops trending/analysis for process KPI’s to provide feedback to the operating team on what process setpoints provide the best product quality for different products. Works with operations/quality teams to improve trends.
Develops product/process capability studies of key process attributes several times per year to identify how performance is changing as process control is improving. Communicate the results to mill management and identify areas of improvement.
Supports mill product development activities when required
Lead brainstorming sessions (A3, fishbone, 4 square and FMEA types) with operations and quality personnel during the initial stages of the process control effort to identify the key factors that must be addressed for improved process control
Conduct process optimization trials (including process plans and final reports) at mills using statistical methods (Design of Experiments) as necessary. Report on key process improvement efforts monthly to operations/QA management.
Support EVRAZ EBS activities as needed
If financial investment is required, provide support Engineering/QA/Operations teams to define the potential savings of process improvements
Work with the Quality Assurance and Operations teams to ensure that shop floor documents and training identify the features of process control necessary (targets/tolerances; frequency of measurement, etc) to maintain the process control system
Participate in six sigma green belt and black belt training as available
Attend six sigma, lean manufacturing and process control equipment conferences to stay abreast of process control techniques/advancements/in the broader steel manufacturing industry.
Requirements
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science with advanced degree preferred
5 years’ experience working in a QA or Engineering team, preferred
Familiar with ISO Quality standards and Quality Management Systems including quality control planning for new products.
Demonstrated experience using MS Excel and Minitab to analyze numerical data and draw conclusions
Experience identifying and implementing opportunities to deploy SPC to improve process control
Experience giving presentations to management regarding project results
Experience writing technical reports summarizing key findings and identifying next steps
Experience working with teams at various levels of management to accomplish tasks
Experience working effectively with hourly and management ranks
Knowledge of steel mill processes and operations a plus
Knowledge of industry standards including API, CSA, AREMA, ASTM, etc. a plus
Six Sigma green belt qualification a plus.
Capable of using MS Office tools MS Word, and PowerPoint.
Experience with programming including SQL, visual basic and iba analysis tools a plus
Experience with Autocad, Mechanical Desktop & Solidworks a plus
Compensation
$71,800 - $82,570
