PLANNING PRACTICE - HOUSING TEAM
We create, integrate, visualize, and communicate planning concepts as they move from the initial vision through implementation. Our planning professionals build strong client partnerships, working with residents, businesses, developers, educational and medical organizations, state and local governments, the military and other federal agencies to successfully plan the future of their communities or institutions. At Michael Baker International, we focus on people and places, improving communities and creating more sustainable, convenient, equitable, healthful, efficient, and attractive places.

We are currently seeking an energetic and personable intermediate-level Planner to serve local and regional clients and contribute to the overall team environment as part of Michael Baker International's Northern California Housing Team. You will be joining a group of collaborative, passionate, and client-driven housing professionals. The ideal candidate will support team members as they thrive professionally and cultivate new and existing client relationships for our services. This position will focus on both supporting existing lines of work and bringing in new lines of housing-related planning work, including housing policy programs, grant management, affordable housing program implementation and management, community engagement, and housing studies. Your focus will be to assist the Housing Team leadership with the growth in two primary team locations, in Rancho Cordova and Oakland.

Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years researching and writing, including data gathering and analysis

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in affordable housing policy, program management, or grant management

  • A minimum of 1 year leading a project and/or team

  • Basic understanding of CDBG or similar grant programs, below-market rate housing programs, public/civic engagement, and housing policy

  • Experience with local, state, and federal agencies

  • 1 year of community organizing, community building, or community engagement

  • Ideally some marketing and business development activities, including proposals and presentations

  • Community and professional leadership experience

    Skills


  • Demonstrated strong research and writing skills

  • Public speaking skills

  • Ability to foster and cultivate the Michael Baker culture and exemplify the company's shared values

  • Computer skills: MS Office Suite

  • AICP certification preferred

  • Must be bright, organized, and determined, and able to build relationships with a wide variety of people;

  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently as well as in multi-disciplinary teams;

  • Desire to produce first-class work products and a demonstrated personal commitment to accuracy and quality;

  • Ability to quickly get up to speed on our policies, procedures and relevant software while acquiring an understanding of the company's service offerings, and the standards relevant to our projects; and

  • Willingness to travel to our clients' offices throughout the Greater Bay Area, Sacramento and San Joaquin County Area.

    Education


  • Bachelor's degree or higher in planning or related discipline from an accredited program
