Job Description:

Intern One: People

Goal: maximize the efficiency of our people and their work area to improve output and job satisfaction. Identify and eliminate waste. Assist the compounding team in building systems to maintain once complete. Reduce compounder hours per batch by 30%.


  • Proper ratio of compounders to tanks in order to maximize efficiency

  • Thorough documentation of the “Compounder/Helper” staffing system, including comparative costs and training (with Justin Herz, compounding engineer)

  • Standard work investigation/re-alignment for compounders

  • Standard work investigation/re-alignment for PTOs

Intern Two: Processes

Goal: identify and eliminate constraints in our processes to maximize efficiency and minimize non-value added time during manufacture of compounding fill. Identify and eliminate waste. Develop, with the compounding leadership team, short, mid, and long term plans to further improve output and minimize waste in compounding processes. Assist the compounding team in building systems to maintain once complete. Increase tank turns from 2.7 to 4.0 per week per tank.


  • Equipment constraints, including lack of “critical spares”

  • Improve communication between departments and department members

  • “Simultaneous Use” constraints (water, cooling system, with Justin Herz, compounding engineer)

  • Best practices for moving and storing compounding materials

  • Lean organization of the department

Weekly review of these projects will take place between all parties and will include senior leadership from all areas.

The first four weeks will be spent on identifying opportunities and ranking them, using data collected during this period, on feasibility and costs. Once projects have been identified, presented to senior leadership, and run through the approvals process, the following four weeks will be spent on completing the identified projects. This may require additional A3 or RIE events depending on data collected; these events would include as many compounding employees as possible to earn “hearts and minds”. Long or complex projects may require additional capital investment or completion dates outside the Q2 scope.
