Job Description:

The Auto Mechanic performs proper diagnosis, repairs and maintenance to vehicles as assigned. Maintain consistently high standards on quality, efficiency and safety. Must know, practice and ensure company policies and procedures and state or federal laws are always followed.

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to the following: 

1. Provide excellent customer service:  

§ Make sure customers receive prompt, efficient and courteous attention.  Notify Mechanical Services of any delays or discrepancies in repair estimates.  

§ Maintain a professional appearance, orderly work environment and friendly disposition by greeting others.  

§ Return customer’s vehicles in clean condition with radios, seats, mirrors and other convenience items in the same position as when the customer brought the vehicle in.  No smoking in customer vehicles.

§ Resolve any customer complaints in a friendly, courteous manner and advise Management of all serious complaints or incidences. 

§ Practice and promote company Core Values. 

2. Perform diagnostic services:

§ Conduct diagnostic service per department standards and factory specifications; deviation from standards and specifications require management preapproval.   

§ Assist the Manager in creating a proper estimate by informing them as to discrepancies or abnormalities in time required to perform the service and parts required for the job.  

§ Recommend additional repairs needed or maintenance to the Manager

3. Perform repair and maintenance services:

§ Perform assigned repair and maintenance per department standards and factory specifications; deviation from standards and specifications require management preapproval.   

§ Keep Mechanical Services Manager or designee informed of job status, especially when job is interrupted or delayed.  Keep the Manager informed as to the progress and/or problems with work load.  Request assistance with repairs or inspections as needed.

§ Test and recheck all repairs and road test all comebacks as assigned by the Manager.  

§ Look up parts to perform the service.  Use parts in stock when possible and order parts from outside vendors when required.  Save and tag warranty parts or cores for return to vendor.

4. Other:

§ Properly complete all work order documentation.  Check off each job and return the work order to the Manager when work has been completed.

§ Maintain and improve technical expertise through technical bulletins, trade publications and training seminars.  

§ Advise the Mechanical Services Manager of all equipment breakdowns and required maintenance immediately.

§ Respond to and follow proper procedures on employee and customer accidents, injuries, and loss or damage to any property.  Report all incidents to the Manager.

Auto Mechanic I – Specific Responsibilities and Skills

§ A/C & Heater - Operate the system and recognize if the system is cooling or not, Perform basic system checks such as power to compressor, Visually inspect condenser, belt tension, etc., Identify Freon and oil leaks

§ Brakes - Identify components of brake system, Visually inspect brakes, Identify irregular noises and leaks, Perform simple system tests, Measure lining, drums, rotors, cams, Road test for proper operation, Check fluid level, Adjust service and park brakes and perform repair. 

§ Electrical Charging Systems - Visually inspect batteries, Clean connections, Check condition of belts, Test batteries, Check alternator mounting and pulley, Replace and adjust belts, Perform basic charging system check

§ Clutch - Lubricate bearing, linkage, shafts and cables, Identify proper clutch operation

§ Cooling Systems - Check and adjust coolant levels, antifreezes (and requirements), Visually inspect system for leaks, Make minor repairs such as hose replacements, fan shrouds, fittings, Pressure test, Flush and refill systems

§ Electrical Cranking System – Inspect/ test batteries, cables and motor, Clean battery cables, connections and starter, Check, charge and replace batteries, Repair/replace defective cables, Read wiring schematics.

§ Lighting System and Electrical Accessories - Repair minor wiring problems, Replace bulbs, lenses and simple light assembles, Adjust/replace sealed beams, Install/replace accessories (heated mirrors, fans, spotlights, etc.)

§ Drive Axles - Inspect housings for leaks, Change oil and filter and clean breathers

§ Driveline - Lubricate drive line, Inspect components for wear or damage

§ Gas Engines - Check and adjust oil levels, Identify unusual noises and oil leaks

§ Fuel Systems - Replace and prime fuel filter, Check gas and diesel fuel system components such as fuel lines, pickup tubes, return lines, etc. for proper integrity and condition.

§ Preventive Maintenance - Proper lube techniques, Minimal tire inspection, Brake check/applied stroke, Battery check, Under vehicle check/lose components, Initial Fault code identification

§ Tire and Wheel Maintenance - Perform air pressure checks, Check tread depth, Identify tires that need to be changed or repaired, Perform tire Checks, Replace tire and wheel assembles, Mount/dismount and rotate tires, 

Auto Mechanic II – Specific Responsibilities and Skills

§ All Items listed in Level I

§ A/C, Heater & Refrigeration - Flush system contaminants, Evacuate system, add oil and charge with Freon, Run OEM performance tests and verify performance, Utilize electrical schematics, identify and correct related problems, Diagnose and repair all systems and related problems

§ Brakes - Diagnose bake problems, Replace cylinders and calipers, Perform failure analysis of components, Diagnose and repair all systems and related problems. 

§ Electrical Charging Systems - Perform full diagnostic, including in-depth analysis and corrections

§ Clutch - Perform failure analysis for premature or abuse, Diagnose and repair all system and related problems

§ Cooling systems - Diagnose all fan clutch types, Diagnose all control systems, Replace fan clutches, Diagnose and repair all systems and related problems

§ Electrical Cranking System - Analyze to identify root cause, Diagnose and repair all system and related problems.

§ Lighting system and Electrical Accessories - Evaluate lighting system configuration and application, Diagnose, isolate and repair difficult lighting system problems, such as shorted and open circuits, Replace entire lighting circuits such as looms, or circuit breaker panels on power units

§ Drive Axels - Inspect housing for leaks, Perform diagnostics and major repairs as required

§ Driveline - Lubricate drive lines, Perform diagnostics and major repairs as required

§ All Engines – Check/ adjust oil level, Identify unusual noises and oil leaks, Diagnose/ repairs as required

§ Fuel Systems - Diagnose all fuel system malfunctions, Make adjustments to fuel system components, Repair and replace electrical fuel system components including injectors

§ Preventative Maintenance – Full fault code identification

§ Steering, Axle and Alignment – Diagnose/repair power steering, Disassemble, diagnose/repair steering gear boxes

§ Suspension-Chassis and Cab - Diagnose hard to find problems and all types of system problems, Maintain, repair and replace all chassis components, Perform failure analysis and substantiate premature failure

§ Tire and wheel maintenance - Repair and replace tire and wheel assemblies, Repair and replace tire and make repairs, Properly diagnose and repair cause of improper wear conditions

Auto Mechanic I Qualifications:

§ High School Diploma or GED preferred.

§ Two (2) ASE Certifications are preferred. 

§ 1 to 2 years of auto mechanic experience preferred. 

§ Must be qualified to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license.

§ Must be able to drive vehicles with either standard or automatic transmissions.

§ Must become tire and wheel qualified within first six months. 

§ Effective customer relations, communication and interpersonal skills required. 

§ Ability to understand and adhere to Company policies in all areas.

§ Computer skills required

§ Functional knowledge to operate automated shop computers and diagnostic test equipment.

§ Must have basic tools for Auto Mechanic work (wrenches, sockets, plyers, screwdrivers).

Auto Mechanic II Qualifications:

§ Must have qualifications in Level I.

§ Must be able to perform all Level I responsibilities and skills. 

§ Proficient in Brake, Tire & Wheel, A/C battery Charge and Check, 

§ Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the field or a related area required.

§ Proficient knowledge to operate automated shop computers and diagnostic test equipment.

§ Computer literacy required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The physical activity requirements of the position are from Medium to Heavy Physical Work

§ Constant – standing, watching, touching and fingering, listening

§ Frequent – walking, talking, reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, crouching, lifting

§ Occasional – climbing, balancing, crawling

§ Potential – running, jumping, yelling, or other rapid or forceful movement in emergency situations

This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental working conditions, including temperature changes, outside weather conditions, slightly elevated ambient noise levels, minor potential physical hazards, such as electrical current , moving mechanical parts, exposure to hot equipment and cleaning and pesticide chemicals; and minor atmospheric conditions affecting skin or respiratory systems, such as fumes, odors and dusts associated with internal and external service station/convenience food and petroleum dispensing operations..
