Job Description:

The Director of Emergency Management & Safety is responsible for strategy, planning, and management of the Emergency Preparedness Program, Emergency Response, coordination of Environment of Care Programs, and Environmental Safety and Security across the Augusta Health continuum.


The Director of Emergency Management & Safety interfaces especially closely with the Directors of: Facility Operations & Maintenance, Security, Clinical Engineering, and Environmental Services to meet the joint requirements and objectives of managing the Environment of Care.


The position is responsible for Emergency Preparedness and Emergency Management; this includes maintaining plans for emergency scenarios, designing and conducting appropriate drills and exercises, and providing expertise with regard to this subject matter for the organization overall. Additionally, this position has responsibility for the Environment of Care plans and to ensure the hospital environment is in accordance with state, federal and accrediting bodies.


The Director will act as community liaison with local, county and state planning activities to include preparedness, mitigation and education and will conduct employee education on related programs. The position will ensure integration and coordination of all Safety, Security, Emergency Management and Environment of Care programs provided by Augusta Health and will perform regular evaluations of these programs for leadership review.


The position is responsible for the overall supervision, administrative planning, control and coordination of the management functions of these areas in order to achieve quality, financial and customer service objectives of the organization in accordance with all state, federal and accrediting agencies. The Director promotes the organization’s philosophy, mission, and values during all interactions with patients, families, visitors, staff, vendors, and the community.


EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSES/DEGREES



  • Healthcare, hospital-specific, background.

  • Bachelor’s degree required in appropriate background discipline, including: Engineering, Facilities, Business, Emergency Management, Safety Management, Occupational Safety or related field.


    • National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 credentials.

    • Emergency training and certifications such as Advanced Life Support, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, or similar preferred.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS



    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare operations preferred – including use and knowledge of: The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) accreditation, National Fire Protection (NFPA) Life Safety Code, and governmental regulations (including FEMA, DHS, EPA) as applicable to the hospital Emergency Management and Environment of Care.

    • 2-3 years in a supervisory role of Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness, or Environment of Care.

    • Hazardous Materials Management, Safety, Emergency and Disaster preparedness and response experience.

    SKILL REQUIREMENTS



    • Knowledge of federal and state laws, policies, government regulations, and executive orders relevant to emergency management, environment of care, hazardous materials and security.

    • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in leadership, strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, and coordination or people and resources.

    • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills including knowledge or rules of composition and rhetoric.

    • Ability to anticipate and effectively facilitate developmental planning meetings.

    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision making.

    • Ability to work independently to organize and prioritize duties and responsibilities.

    • Ability to work with government agencies, law enforcement, fire officials and the general public to coordinate emergency responses.

    Licensure



    • Valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable DMV record.
