CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE

Michael Baker International's civil engineering professionals manage and staff active projects in over 40 countries on five continents. Services are provided for a broad range of projects and capabilities, including highways, airports, bridges, rail and transit systems, government and commercial facilities, water and wastewater infrastructure, oil and gas infrastructure, and commercial/urban development. Our fields of expertise span all areas of civil engineering and include an extensive variety of specialty disciplines, such as environmental compliance and restoration, coastal engineering, urban development, and mining.

DESCRIPTION

INDOT or IDOT experience highly preferred.

An Environmental Scientist is responsible for the execution of the technical aspects of a project within established schedule and budget constraints. A mid-level NEPA document and permitting specialist with minimum 5 or more years of experience working for/under INDOT or similar DOT.

The position requires excellent communication, organizational, and detailed document management and tracking skills. Technical responsibilities will include conducting ArcGIS mapping, NEPA environmental site assessments, preparing, tracking and submitting agency coordination, red flag investigations, programmatic and categorical exclusions, permits, public hearings, and coordination of supporting technical reports.

Wetland delineation training and HAZWOPER training a plus.

An Illinois or Indiana driver's license is required or the ability to secure one. The position will be reporting out of the Chicago, IL or Indianapolis, Indiana office.

In the office:

Prepare and mail merge agency coordination letters

Conduct Red Flag Investigation reports

Prepare PCE and CE1-CE4 reports

Plan and prepare applicable permits

Manage ArcGIS files

Prepare for and attend agency and public meetings

Coordinate with engineering staff and review road and bridge plans

Document management, file management, and data management

In the field:

Conduct wetland delineations and functions and values assessments (such as In-WRAP or ORAM)

Perform stream assessment studies (such as QHEI and HHEI)

Assist with environmental media (such as surface water) sample collection

Provide field documentation regarding threatened and endangered species

Assist with noise monitoring

Provide accurate documentation of field activities

Assist with Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS


  • B.S. in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience desired, transportation planning experience a plus
  • INDOT or IDOT experience preferred
  • Proficiency in ArcView GIS systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook), with an emphasis on Excel and pivot tables

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil-3D, H&H Modeling and MicroStation a plus

  • USACE 38 Hour Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation training a plus
  • BIAS, IPaC, and IDEM VFC experience a plus
  • OSHA 40 HAZWOPER certification a plus
  • Proficiency in technical writing and quantitative data analysis is a must
  • Must have a valid IN Driver's License or ability to secure
  • Ability to track multiple projects on independent milestone schedules
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting planning reports and design projects, as well as strong organizational skills
