E-Discovery Manager, Data Strategy Team (Consulting Manager, E-Discovery, 9P)

Prudential’s Data Strategy Team in the Enterprise Litigation Group is seeking an experienced e-discovery manager.  Under the direction of in-house and outside counsel, the Data Strategy Team provides quality-controlled, efficient and cost-effective discovery management services for global litigation and regulatory matters impacting the Company.  The Data Strategy Team manages all aspects of discovery activities, from records and information governance to preservation, through to collection, analytics, review and production.  In addition to discovery project management, the successful candidate will be managing the Legal Process Unit, a central team that acts as a gatekeeper for all legal mail served upon the Company. 

The successful candidate must be prepared to work in a fast-paced and high-volume team environment.  Excellent interpersonal skills are required as there will be significant interaction with associates across all levels of the organization as well as outside counsel and third-party vendors.  This position also requires a candidate that can multi-task, prioritize, and work independently under tight time constraints. 

Job Description

The roles and responsibilities include:


  • Tracking and managing discovery projects effectively to completion while keeping in-house and outside counsel apprised of developments. 

  • Understanding preservation and collection issues of data sources within Prudential’s possession, custody or control, and partnering with an internal collections team who performs collections of electronically stored information. 

  • Strong comfort level with e-discovery technology to provide guidance on data processing, application of search terms, analytical tools and production parameters, including advice on any documentation covering such topics, e.g., ESI protocols.

  • Assisting counsel with drafting protocols for document review performed by managed review vendors. 

  • Supervising Prudential’s e-discovery technology and managed review vendors. 

  • Tracking the e-discovery budget including tracking accruals and invoices. 

  • Maintaining the team’s discovery dashboard, which reports on metrics and expenses associated with Prudential’s discovery matter portfolio. 

  • Managing Prudential’s legal hold process and technology.  This includes, but is not limited to, training and assisting Law Department attorneys and paralegals on the legal hold process, procedures and platform, and identifying ways to continually improve said process and technology. 

  • Partnering with Corporate Records Management and the business/corporate center records management contacts to provide guidance and training on records and legal hold-related issues.   

  • Overseeing the team’s role in the subpoena handling process, in coordination with the respective businesses or law/compliance areas and the Subpoena Response Team in Enterprise Litigation.    

  • Managing team of two Legal Process Unit associates, who intakes all legal mail that is served/mailed/sent to the Company and ensures that the mail is forwarded to the appropriate area for handling.  This also includes gaining a comprehension of service of process issues involving the Company, and its affiliates and subsidiaries. 

Required Skills and Experience


  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. 

  • A college degree is required.  A project management certification or a law degree will be considered a plus. 

  • Knowledge of the discovery process, including best practices and technologies that support legal holds, processing, and analytics, including for technology assisted review (“TAR”). 

  • Strong managerial and leadership skills. 

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.  

  • Ability to collaborate with diverse internal and external parties. 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability. 

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.  

  • Ability to conduct legal research. 

  • Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite and other productivity tools.
