Job Description and Responsibilities

EVRAZ North America is hiring a Laboratory Manager for our Portland, Oregon facility. In this position a successful candidate will direct the lab personnel to prepare steel samples for mechanical testing, and complete that testing in a manner that meets our customers’ needs while ensuring employee safety and maximizing productivity. This position reports to the Senior Director, Technical Services.


  • Lead lab personnel in the preparation of steel samples for mechanical testing in accordance with customer requirements


  • Maintain and utilize the lab facility space in an efficient manner to ensure the most efficient usage of machining equipment


  • Ensure testing is compliant with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), ABS, American Petroleum Institute (API), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and customer specifications


  • Coordinate both planned preventive maintenance as well as corrective maintenance to maintain full production


  • Maintain a safe work environment by utilizing inspections, safety contacts, and providing/attending regular meetings to ensure safe working conditions


  • Utilize effective controls to ensure accomplishment of the Technical Services Department’s objectives as they relate to quality and workmanship


  • Lead by participation and model and train lab personnel in best practices in both sample preparation and testing


  • Create, prepare, review and distribute facility reports on sample processing and performing independent analyses of demand, throughput, cycle time, machine utilization, and machine uptime to optimize and improve test lab performance


  • Keep management informed of all issues affecting laboratory testing


Requirements


  • Minimum of five years supervisory experience, preferred


  • Experience in mechanical testing laboratory environments or experience in high volume machining shops with a focus on processing of steel parts


  • Experience with Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machining equipment and software


  • Computer literate and versed in the use of Excel, Minitab, Stat Graphics or other data analysis software tools


  • Solid math skills


  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills


  • Familiar with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) quality standards


  • Ability to learn, lead and direct a crew of production employees


  • Ability to work effectively with other departments


  • Experience utilizing lean manufacturing tools and concepts to continuously reduce waste.


  • Strong leadership/supervisory skills with the proven ability to motivate and guide a team in the accomplishment of key performance indicators


  • Ensuring the teams put safety first, creating a proactive culture with regards to eliminating potential hazards


  • Ability to work in an environment with fluctuations in heat, humidity, fumes, odors, dust and noise


  • Solid understanding of material/process flow, cycle times, bottlenecks and quick changeovers


  • Must be able to problem solve and collaborate in a team environment


  • Must be able to identify the root cause of problems and implement solutions in a timely manner
