The impact the successful candidate will make in this Role:

The Safety and Industrial Business Group Hardgoods Value Stream organization supports a variety of technologies required to support hardgoods (non-chemical and/or software products) oriented product manufacturing.  This will include injection molding, extrusion, automated assembly, metal forming, electronics manufacturing, and tools/applicator fabrication at both internal and outsource manufacturing locations.  This position is within the Hardgoods Value Stream within 3M SIBG Operations group.

  • Developing and deploying new technologies for electrical and electronic hardgoods manufacturing systems, providing new growth opportunities in addition to supporting existing 3M products and businesses

  • Developing subject matter expertise in value stream improvement and technologies to advance sustainable manufacturing processes while providing consistently high levels of service to customers.

  • Applying fundamental engineering and supply chain operations principles to develop and enable end to end value stream optimization and improvement.

  • Demonstrating leadership skills with new product development teams from commercialization process to launch.

  • Collaborating with a combination of internal, third-party and offshore development teams.

  • Leading multi-disciplinary, multi-site teams to implement and improve value stream design for electronic hardware products used in global Electrical Markets applications.

  • Conducting cost-benefit analysis on manufacturing operations to develop recommendations and prioritize opportunities based on sound economic and technical principles

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Seven (7) combined years of experience in hardgoods/product manufacturing engineering in a private, public, government or military environment.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical Chemical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.

  • Ten (10) years of hardgoods/product manufacturing engineering experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with multi-component hardgoods (non-chemical product) manufacturing, sourcing and assembly, involving injection molding, extrusion, metal fabrication, component assembly, coating, converting, and operational process scale-up (Lab->Pilot->Manufacturing) and technology transfers.

  • Experience manufacturing products for use in the Electrical Markets industry such as power utility and commercial electrical markets. 

  • Experience manufacturing products requiring manufacture of or sourcing printed circuit boards.

  • Lean Six Sigma trained (Green Belt or Black Belt) and experience leading high impact LSS projects

  • Demonstrated experience working with and establishing multiple step manufacturing value streams across multiple manufacturing plants, suppliers and subcontractors globally to manage product cost, quality and service.

  • Understanding of Lean Value Stream Mapping and Value Stream Improvement planning & deployment.

  • Experience identifying new technology or value stream improvement by collaborating with a combination of internal manufacturing, vendors, third-party, and offshore development and manufacturing teams. 

  • Experience with identifying outsource manufacturing vendors for new product scale-up and establishing the associated supply chain and sourcing value stream.

  • Experience managing applications and support of technologies and/or and product value streams across multiple global manufacturing locations.

  • Demonstrated strength in process and manufacturing engineering problem solving and cross-functional project management skills

Travel: May include up to 20% (domestic & international)
