Actuary - Data Science & Advanced Analytics

We're actively seeking a talented Data Science Actuary to join our Advanced Analytics team in Aliso Viejo, CA. This role can be on-site or 100% remote.

As an Actuary on this team, you'll play a key role in Pacific Life's growth and long-term success by applying actuarial insight and analysis in the development of complex predictive models. You will partner with data scientists and key business stakeholders to frame business needs in mathematical terms, help manage model risk, and help interpret model results as actionable insights. While joining the Advanced Analytics team, you'll develop the advanced models, predictive dashboards and reporting that will enhance business decisions in LID - and promote best practices in analytics projects throughout LID.

How you will make an impact:


  • Performs actuarial analyses to assess and manage risk associated with insurance and other financial products and instruments.

  • Analyzes and provides counsel to business leaders regarding the economic and financial costs of risk and uncertainty for the business based on an understanding of mathematics, statistics, financial theory, economics, and the business environment.

  • Uses knowledge of advanced statistical analysis, predictive modeling analytics, financial accounting, and/or actuarial research to develop, test and validate models utilized in business decisions.

  • Monitors, and analyzes laws, regulations and developments applicable to actuarial science, company operations, and competitive landscape in the marketplace.

  • Considers internal and external statistical trends, factors, issues, and data impacting results as well as the company's business goals and strategies in analyses, recommendations, and/or decisions.

The experience you will bring:


  • 5+ years of experience in actuarial science

  • Strong understanding of predictive analytics and data science

  • 3+ years of experience with AI/ML (scikit-learn, xgboost, tensorflow, etc.) and data visualization tools (Tableau, PowerBI, etc.)

  • Very skilled in modeling/programming and quantitative analysis

  • Experience using actuarial software such as Prophet and MG-ALFA

  • Solid business acumen to put analytics in the appropriate context while identifying key metrics that measure and drive long term growth.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

What will make you stand out:


  • ASA or FSA

  • Working knowledge od pricing and/or product design

  • Experience in software engineering
