Spec Engineering is seeking a difference maker to join our team as a client-facing SeniorControls Engineerwho is the definition of detail oriented.This person's talent is tomanage the controls aspect of all assigned projects from start to finish including maintaining project timelines, scheduling, and coordinating with departments and contractors involved.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:


  • Conceptualize, engineer, and complete detailed design of controls, safety, and power circuits for automation projects. Use AutoCAD to design electrical schematics, pneumatic systems and panel layouts for automation systems per specifications. Create specs from variety of sources including from scratch as required. Evaluate/integrate designs with mechanical design.

  • Apply broad knowledge of technical principles, procedures and practices to define product concept, design schematics, layouts, bills of material (hardware selection) associated software, and wiring diagrams. Ensure safety concepts are part of design.

  • Leverage existing designs to the greatest extent possible and work to build designs that can be re-used for similar applications in the future.

  • Assist Application Engineers with quoting System controls as needed.

  • Outline machine sequence of operations by flowcharting format.

  • Meet project budget, cost and time schedules and deadlines.

  • Test, troubleshoot, debug designs, pilot runs, customer acceptance training.

  • Travel and interface with customer and resources as required to troubleshoot controls issues at customer sites. Perform electrical and some mechanical work as a standalone support person.

  • Evaluate the feasibility of conceptual projects and prepares detailed analysis, including time and cost for completing the projects.

  • Program PLC's using Rockwell Automation Studio 5000.

  • Configure HMI's using Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View Studio.

  • Test, implement, commission projects.

  • Communicate and report to Project Management and other teammates as needed for successful completion on the project.

  • Problem Solving - Develops alternative solutions when necessary, gathers and analyzes information skillfully, identifies problems in a timely manner and develops realistic and creative solutions, resolves problems in early stages and over-communicates to ensure all internal and external stakeholders are aware of plans to resolve issues, and works well on teams and in group problem solving situations.


  • Customer Service - Displays courtesy and sensitivity when dealing with both internal and external customers. Manages challenging, difficult or emotional customer situations with professionalism and a focus on resolving any issues to the benefit of both SPEC and the customer. Meets commitments and proactively communicates if/when issues arise. Responds promptly to customer needs. Proactively solicits customer feedback to improve service.


  • Teamwork - Balances team and individual responsibilities. Contributes to building a positive team spirit and is a net positive addition to the Spec culture. Exhibits objectivity and openness to others' views. Gives and welcomes feedback. Puts the success of the Spec team above own interests.


RequiredEducation/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or similar field.

  • 5-10 years of experience in the industry.

  • Experience in an OEM environment is preferred.

  • Detailed programming capability in Allen Bradley PLC Logic.

  • Factory Talk HMI programming ability.

  • A working knowledge in the use of AutoCAD.

  • An ability to design and develop electrical schematics for control panel construction.

  • A working knowledge of the following systems is not required but considered a plus:
    • Wonderware, Siemens, PLC5 and Automation Direct
