Plant Operator reports directly to the Operations Supervisor.
To operate a combined cycle plant (4 combustion turbine on 1 steam turbine) in a responsible, safe, and environmentally friendly manner to maximize generation, while maintaining steam generation responsibilities of the Channelview Cogeneration Plant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversees the safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sound operation of plant equipment.
Understands and executes the equipment clearance (LOTO) procedure, as well as, Job Safety Analysis/Work Authorization/Confined Space/Hot Work Permits.
Follows all plant safety procedures and participates in plant safety initiatives/programs.
Participate in training and promote the Company's policies through actions and conduct.
Follow all Company policies and expectations and behave in a manner that promotes the Company's vales and positively effects morale.
Properly operates HRSG, steam turbine, gas turbines, plant auxiliary equipment and systems during normal and emergency operation.
Performs water analysis of HRSG water and make necessary adjustments to chemical feed to maintain water quality to within desired specifications.
Aligns plant equipment; makes necessary adjustments to plant systems/equipment as directed by Control Room Operator.
Operates various manual valves throughout the plant site.
Takes direction from the Control Room Operator or Head Operator.
Communicates information clearly, both orally and written.
Assists others in performance testing of equipment/systems.
Assists in on-the-job training of other Operators.
Troubleshoots plant equipment to resolve operational problems.
Generates and reviews Work Requests for execution of equipment repair.
Operates various computer systems (DCS/PLC) to receive, analyze, comprehend and input data.
Able to complete site specific Plant Operator Quals within 6 months of hire date, and able to complete Head Operator Quals within 2 year after Plant Operator quals completion.
Monitors and records data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures.
Assists in providing skill enhancement training to other personnel.
Assists in development, review, and revision of plant operating procedures.
Implements Plant Emergency Procedures as needed.
Operates electric generating units to control flow and processing of electrical energy.
Observes variations in operating conditions and take appropriate actions.
Monitor off-loading of Aqueous Ammonia and other bulk chemicals at the site.
Interprets meter and gauge readings of various pieces of equipment/systems.
Completes appropriate rounds readings, equipment PMS and other inspection documentation.
Uses loose and tight fit respirators.
Assists maintenance personnel in performance of maintenance activities to include use of tools, equipment and Company vehicles.
What You Will Bring
High School diploma or equivalent.
2 or 4 year degree in a technical field - preferred.
Combined Cycle Plant Operator experience (3-5 years or more) - preferred.
Combustion Turbine Operation (3-5 years or more) - preferred.
Plant Operator experience in the Power Industry (5 years or more) - preferred.
Ability to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to perform flow, pressure and meter calculations.
Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
Reads and interprets blueprints, schematic diagrams, P&IDs, procedures and technical manuals.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of power plant operations, systems, and equipment.
Ability to analyze and interpret data to make sound recommendation on plant components.
Use trouble-shooting skills to solve problems.
Uses hand and power tools and equipment.
Directs activities of others and provide job instructions.
Communicates conditions of plant system and equipment to others.
Applies knowledge of steam power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision making and work tasks.
Good computer skills (Microsoft Office programs) to complete operational spreadsheets and print or email as needed.
Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems.
Discerns and responds to verbal and auditory signals from control panel (DCS, CEMs, PLC systems).
Works without supervision while carrying out duties.
Takes, records and analyzes readings of various electrical and mechanical meters.
Possesses the knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation.
Meets physical requirements of the job such as perform tasks while standing, walking, climbing, walking on uneven surfaces, and squatting. Works with extended reach above head and in front of body and lifts 50 pounds and carry while walking distances of up to 10 feet.
Possesses the ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment and maintain operating licenses and certifications. TDL required.
Normal office environment and /or out-of-doors work environment. Out-of-doors environment at generating plant work locations includes:
Works in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 150 feet.
Works in all temperatures and climatic conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
Able to work at heights (top of HRSG, equipment structure, cooling tower, etc).
Works in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
Performance of duties requires working rotating shifts (shift work) and response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week. Ability to work overtime, both scheduled and unscheduled, on days of relief and beyond regular work schedule.
Emergency situations will require the use of a respirator.
Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
Substantial footwear must be worn.
Incumbent may be required to work in conditions where hazardous material and /or toxic fumes could be present. Additionally, incumbent will be exposed to areas of high heat, loud noise, steam, combustible gases, rotating machinery and other conditions normally encountered in an operating generation facility.
