Position Overview

This is a skilled position requiring the individual to manage a variety of functions related to the transportation operations within Staker Parson Materials & Construction’s South Wasatch Front business unit. The individual must have a good understanding of construction, paving and material distribution business as they relate to transportation. The Driver Superintendent will be responsible for coordinating the efficient utilization of trucking resources and personnel and regular reports reflecting status of the transportation process. Position reports to the Operations Manager – Transportation.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations and help insure compliance

  • Check that thorough Pre and Post Trips are being done. That start up and shut downs are being done in a timely manner

  • Good knowledge of Transportation equipment and how to best utilize

  • Recruit and hire new employees

  • Insure all new hires are going through onboarding process, 30/60/90, Smith Systems, CAPs’, policies, task training in appropriate equipment etc.

  • Help supervise all transportation personnel in your assigned area

  • Work closely with employees and help train and advance employees who want more responsibilities.

  • Ability to listen to employees concerns and help coach them with positive feedback

  • Address any problems with employees and deal with necessary discipline actions

  • Attend scheduling/pre construction meetings, and meet with Project Superintendents on upcoming jobs and trucking needs.

  • Help ensure on time delivery of products to our job sites. Monitoring that they are done safely and efficiently to reduce costs

  • Monitor employee safety and performance throughout day.  Do periodic ride along and give feedback to employee

  • Make time to get to job and plant sites to monitor productivity. Give direction to help reduce wait time and improve efficiency

  • Review any incidents and determine what failure we had and how we can fix it going forward. This might be an engineering fix, further training or Human Performance. Come up with a coaching action plan and monitor employee throughout the incident and review process

  • Do annual evaluations with drivers and set goals for them to achieve. Address any areas where improvement is needed

  • Review company driver’s time and all DOT required documents and make sure they are up to date.

  • Attend safety meetings and continuously improve safety. Help ensure all employees are getting required safety training completed. Smith systems, MSHA, Hazmat, monthly safety, etc.)

  • Work closely with shops. Inspect and analyze repairs on trucks. Insure equipment is getting repaired as quickly and cost effective as possible. Determine if disciplinary action is required due to abuse of equipment

  • Identify / Locate potential dumps sites, best haul routes.

  • Other duties as assigned by Manager

Supervisory Responsibilities


  • Directly supervises all driver personnel in assigned transportation area.

Education and/or Experience


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

  • Three or more years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted.

Language Skills


  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

  • Ability to write correspondence.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills


  • Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to compute rate, ration, percent, land to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability


  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions

Computer Skills


  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately and have knowledge of Database software.

  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferred.
