Job Summary

Our 10-week Summer Internship Program is an ideal way for both undergrad and graduate students to gain real-life work experience while learning what a career at Blue Shield of California can offer. Interns work on real-world projects and initiatives while being immersed in all aspects of our business. From interacting with senior leadership to visiting a neighborhood health clinic, interns will build a better understanding of the diversity and complexities of working in the dynamic world of health insurance.

Reporting to the Actuarial Shared Services team, the role of the summer intern is critical to the success of Blue Shield of California and the Actuarial department in realizing its goals and objectives. This individual will play a key role as part of the corporate actuarial team in development of machine learning models and forecasts of financial performance. The internship role will also provide support in further developing the team's technical capabilities.

Program start date: 6/8/2020

Program end date: 8/14/2020

Throughout the internship program, you will have the ability to learn about additional employment opportunities within the organization. This will include full time positions (that are open during the internship time period) as well as other Talent Pipeline Programs like the award-winning Shield Emerging Leader and Management Trainee Programs. Should you be considered for any of these opportunities, you will receive support from the program leaders as part of the transition into our organization.

Responsibilities

Specifically, the summer intern role will be accountable for


  • Assisting in development and training of machine learning models designed to address multiple actuarial problems (trend, reserves, large claims)

  • Updating, enhancing, and optimizing Blue Shield forecast models

Key Outcomes for this position


  • Development of machine learning models that improve upon the accuracy of existing, traditional actuarial tools

  • Increase adoption and expertise regarding machine learning within the Actuarial team

  • Accurate and explainable forecasts of Blue Shield financial performance






Knowledge and Experience


  • No work experience required

  • In the process of pursuing a Bachelor's degree; emphasis on data science and machine learning and/or actuarial science

  • Enthusiastic and energetic about machine learning, data science, and how it can be applied in business and actuarial contexts

  • Strong programming skills and understanding of latest machine learning techniques

  • Collaborative team player

  • Strong communication skills
