Your Role

Gensler's San Diego Office is seeking a Technical Designer with experience in Life Sciences to join our team of design thinkers and doers who specialize in helping to tell stories and create experiences in the context of science and technical spaces. What You Will Do


  • Provide design and documentation of laboratory facilities for a range of projects.


  • Develop architectural drawings and specifications to communicate planning concepts for project documentation and construction. Apply proper QA/QC methods throughout project.


  • Lead periodic project meetings and presentations; ensure client is adequately briefed on project progress


  • Participate in user group meetings (heads of departments, specialists, etc.) to help collect program needs for laboratory specifications in technical facilities.


  • Assist in the design development, modification and/or review of laboratory planning concepts and solutions, prioritizing sustainably-responsible design. .


  • Assist in developing project scope, plan, and services during the contract process. Translate planning concepts into comprehensible terms for clients, designers and project team members.


  • Develop architectural drawings and specifications to communicate planning concepts for project documentation and construction.


  • Prepare and modify architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, etc.


  • Anticipate and develop solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.


  • Ability to convey laboratory planning needs to designers and end users.


  • Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively with client's , scientists, laboratory managers and technicians, facilities and project managers.


Your Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or equivalent in education required. Master's degree preferred.


  • 4 -10 years experience in Architecture inclusive of 3+ years' laboratory experience such as: vivarium, bio-containment, research, teaching (science), pharmaceutical, public health, clinical, process and manufacturing facilities.


  • Experience working directly with senior management, scientists, laboratory managers and technicians, facilities and project managers, and other project stakeholders.


  • Proficiency in Revit required.


  • Knowledge of laboratory planning, design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction.


  • Demonstrable creativity, passion and interest in design and planning of laboratories within technical facilities.


  • LEED accredited preferred. Committed to the principles of sustainable design and resilient communities.


  • Well-rounded, strategic-thinker with an integrated approach to design, management and technical project resolution who can help shape a vision for the future.
