Senior Mechanic, Utility Plant at University of Oklahoma

Job Description:

FUNCTION:

Responsible for the actual installation, replacement, modification, repair, and preventive maintenance of all heating, air conditioning, and electrical generating systems in the Utility Plant/Chilled Water Plants complex.  Coordinates with management to upgrade existing systems or add improved support systems.  Performs tasks requiring good organizational skills.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:


  • Installs, replaces, modifies, and adjusts a wide variety of air conditioning equipment including chillers, pumps, regulators, valves, refrigerators, purge units, electronic frequency drives, and similar supporting equipment. 

  • Inspects, repairs, and cleans, using preventive maintenance principles, all boiler systems, chiller systems, electrical generating systems, water systems, and other subsystems normally associated with a Utility Plant/Chilled Water Plant Complex. 

  • Installs, replaces, modifies, and adjusts a wide variety of steam generating and steam consuming equipment including boilers and their subsystems, hot water tanks, steam turbines, diesel-driven equipment, and additional heating equipment. 

  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical components to include: breakers, motors, three phase systems, variable frequency drives, and motor controls. 

  • Installs, inspects, and modifies sensing devices and control components including PID and PLC loop controllers. 

  • Checks transformers and takes oil sampling for testing. 

  • Ensures reliability of electrical distribution on campus by maintaining control panel and switchgear. 

  • Maintains work records reflecting work accomplished, supplies used, and similar relevant information. 

  • Reviews and assesses safety conditions and procedures and assists in the planning and implementing of new and revised safety regulations. 

  • Performs additional duties as assigned. 

Required Education/Experience:  GED/High School Grad or equivalent combination of education/job related experience,  AND:


  • 5 years of experiance in chiller and boiler maintenance

Skills:


  • Uses tools or equipment with expertise

  • Reads and interprets complex written or printed materials including blueprints and schematics

  • Uses oral and written communication as required to explain complex instructions

  • Performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

  • Performs simple recordkeeping operations requiring logging and filing, making changes to existing records including computerized records

  • Chiller, refrigerent, chilled water system maintenance including motor, controls, and heat exchanger maintenance

  • Chillers and auxiliary equipment

  • Boiler, turbine, generator, chiller system maintenance including electrical and computer controls

Certifications:


  • Refrigeration Mechanic and Freon Handler’s licenses, or ability to obtain within one year of employment

  • Valid Driver's License

Special Requirements:

Working Conditions

Installing and maintaining large pieces of equipment including chillers, pumps, and refrigerators. Installing, maintaining, and replacing, steam generating and consuming equipment. Working with hand tools frequently. Crawling, bending, stooping, and standing often and for prolonged periods. Reaching above the waist for prolonged periods. Climbing steps and ladders often. Lifting and carrying heavy loads (minimum fifty pounds). Reading labels requiring visual color discrimination. Distinguishing mechanical sounds in order to identify system changes. Speaking clearly in potential emergency situations. Exposure to constant loud noise. Ability to handle large and small tools. Exposure to odors, stains on; back, arms, and shoulders. Ability to work in extreme temperature changes

Departmental Preferences:


  • Welder’s certificate 

  • 15 Years Experience 

  • Two years specialized vocational training
