Department Overview

The Finance department is responsible for FP&A functions and project control. This position will be working with the project controlling team and project managers to assisting with project accounting on customer projects.



Job Description

Under general supervision, the Project Accountant is responsible for the financial reporting of Projects, time card reporting, controlling activities as well as initiating and maintaining financial data, supporting project controls improvement and providing regular analysis throughout the life of Projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND COMPETENCIES

Project Accounting:


  • Create project contracts in the accounting system


  • Maintain project related records, including contract and change orders.


  • Set-up project accounts within the accounting system


  • Oversee the accuracy of internal and external projects and data validation.


  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project-related accounts.


  • Review, code, and approve supplier invoices related to projects.


  • Manage the collection of time entry reports from various departments and time tracking tools to process project accounting entries, including implementation of best practices around time tracking & KPI development (productivity measurement).


  • Ensure time sheet completion validated, reviewed against expectations & budget, prior to monthly accounting close.


  • Review and approve overhead charges to be applied to projects.


  • Review account balance related to project assets, liabilities and expenses and reconcile to the General Ledger on a monthly basis, working closely with the SI Controller & Accounting team.


  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to SI Controller.


  • Work closely with Accounting and Project Managers to ensure milestone invoicing are done in accordance with customer contracts and confer with receivables staff regarding unpaid contract billings.


  • Close out project accounts upon project completion, including capitalization of assets.


  • Compile monthly financial data related to Customer Projects, including project profitability, balance sheet position and Executive Summaries.


  • Calculate and/or validate revenues based on a % of Completion.


Project Planning & Analysis:


  • Maintain project Backlog reports and reconcile to EAC's.


  • Work with IT and Business owners to implement time sheet automation and any required testing assistance.


  • Ensure time tracking best practices in all time tracking tools and assist with tracking of productivity metrics.


  • Ad-hoc projects as directed by the Controller, SI Controller, and Project Controller.


  • Assist in tracking project and company-wide Key Performance Indicators ("KPI's") and activity based indicators specific to projects.


Accuracy


  • Monitors accuracy of own transactions.


  • Records transactions accurately.


  • Maintains accurate records.


  • Recognizes and corrects errors.

  • Synthesizes complex financial data into meaningful term.

  • Makes recommendations based on analysis.


  • Identifies data relationships and dependencies.

Desired Skills:


  • 4+ years of experience, preferably in Project Management & Accounting.


  • Must have an understanding of Project Accounting and FASB Codification 606 "Customer Contracts" and ability to demonstrate.


  • Audit or Public Accounting experience beneficial.


  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills.


  • Proficiency in producing documents, Excel or Google spreadsheets, pivot tables, database management, PowerPoint, and Word.


  • Experience with computer automated business systems, including time tracking systems


  • Customer service orientation towards both internal and external customers.


  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.


  • Very good analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.


  • Ability to work independently, as well as within a team environment to optimize results and through-put.


  • Ability to work the required hours of the position and to meet deadlines.




Basic Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree Accounting or Finance


  • 4+ years of Accounting experience
