GENERAL SUMMARY:

The IC Intervention Nurse acts as a liaison between the Independence Center, Lincoln hospitals, medical personnel and other health-related agencies in the evaluation and referral of chemically dependent clients. Evaluates clients for the most appropriate services and referral, informs and teaches medical personnel options and factors involved in dealing with the chemically-dependent clients. Works in a supportive capacity with other Independence Center staff including administering nursing care when appropriate.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. Screens newly admitted patients and 2359 patients per physician orders to detect any possible problems relating to chemical dependency and to intervene with these clients where possible and appropriate; evaluates patient's need for treatment and documents the appropriate referral.

3. Follows Independence Center clients who are admitted to Bryan Medical Center West for detoxification from alcohol and/or other drugs to facilitate their return to the Independence Center; accompanies patients moving from Bryan or Independence Center to another treatment facility as needed.

4. Serves as a liaison with the Bryan nursing staff and physicians to determine the appropriateness of referrals to Independence Center; coordinates admissions with Independence Center staff.

5. Serves as liaison with Mental Health Units; provides information regarding treatment option approaches for patient's presenting with co-occurring disorders.

6. Consults with and provides information regarding chemical dependency to Bryan Medical Center staff, other community health care facilities and the general public.

7. Serves as an expert resource person to the staff and physicians of the Emergency Rooms of Lincoln hospitals to determine the appropriateness of referrals for alcohol and other drug dependent clients.

8. Works with local physicians to make alcohol/other drug-related diagnoses and referrals.

9. Works with managed care reviewers; provides information necessary to clinically pre-certify clients.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. Nursing certification in chemical dependency preferred. Minimum of one (1) year clinical experience working with chemically dependent persons required.

If prior or current history of alcohol and drug dependency, must provide evidence of sobriety for a minimum of 12 months prior to employment. Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Valid State of Nebraska driver's license required. Verification and maintenance of responsible driving record per facility standards required.
