Job Description:

We are looking for dedicated, passionate people who are willing to share their time and talents with children in our community. We are searching for day camp counselors who have experience leading groups of kids and support our goals of camp including giving kids a chance to develop and exhibit character, to build relationships with positive adults and other campers, to feel safe and to learn new skills which lead to a sense of achievement. We would like each of our camp counselors to be able to instruct kids in a focus area, including visual & performing arts, humanities science, dance, sports & games, global learning and fitness.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Day Camp Leader will serve as a dynamic member of the YMCA team by serving our communities in multiple ways; working with a team to create an environment and culture that embodies the Y's mission of strengthening spirit, mind and body. The Day Camp Leader provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp and assists the Site Director in promoting a safe, consistent and stimulating environment at assigned day camp site by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.

Leads and supervises a group of children in day camp setting.

Plans, implements and actively participates in all daily activities, curriculum, and schedule in cooperation with Site Director; programs are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.

Prepares site daily for arrival of children; maintains organization throughout program time; cleans up space at conclusion of program.

Attends all staff meetings, appropriate day camp/child care workshops, appropriate specialized trainings and safety trainings. Maintains required training hours.

Ensures the site's compliance with all ODJFS licensing requirements, ACA accreditation standards and YMCA standards. Maintains written records and reports as required on individual children as necessary for grants if applicable.

Maintains positive relationships and cooperates with children, parents, site staff, administrators, community and YMCA staff.

If applicable, complete duties as required by the Child and Adult Care Food program for site.

Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to record keeping, medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

Demonstrate strong listening skills with all participants and ensures that the programs and experiences meets their needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Passionate belief in the Y's cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Must be at least 18 years old; high school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.

Previous experience working with school-age children, preferably in a day camp or child care setting.

Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, STEAM activities

Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations.

American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, AED, and O2 certifications preferred

ODJFS Orientation to Day Camp training and ODJFS Child Abuse Prevention training must be completed within 30 days of hire date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside summer weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
