Job Description:

Plans, coordinates, and participates in clinical
research protocols and studies. Performs a variety of complex pathologic
procedures, including autopsies and gross surgical specimen dissections.




Responsibilities:




1.    Plans,
coordinates, and ensures high quality performance of all pathology research
activities.


2.    Meets
with individual investigators to assist them in developing their research plan
requests. Coordinates requests to determine eligibility for treatment
protocols.


3.    Assists
investigator in developing projected budgets for their studies.


4.    Ensures
all research activities are documented in the RPS Database, and that the RPS
Database is functional and meets the needs of the Department.


5.    Coordinates
assistance from other sections of the laboratory.


6.    Ensures
processing of research billing information.


7.    Updates
research costing annually to provide data for fee structures.


8.    Keeps
the Medical Director and anatomic pathology Supervisor/Manager apprised of
important events, adverse outcomes, and milestones.


9.    Maintains
databases (e.g., Tumor Bank, Tissue Micro Array, etc.).


10. Performs surgical specimen evaluation
for routine procedures, special studies, and frozen sections. Dictates gross
specimen descriptions. Performs and directs special tissue preparation
protocols and tissue procurement for studies and banking.


11. Hires and performs performance
assessments and/or coaching sessions. Ensures effective training of routine and
special procedures.


12. Assumes responsibility for scheduling to
accomplish research projects. Learns and performs technical procedures to
ensure completion of research projects.


13. Responsible for surgical bench and
morgue operations.


14. Maintains equipment, supplies, and
procedure manuals. Evaluates and recommends new products and equipment.


15. Assists in the development, management,
and maintenance of a frozen tissue bank. Procures tissue for research studies.


16. Oversees PathTech duties in area of
responsibility.


17. Communicates workflow issues, changes,
and other day to day surgical bench operations.


18. Involved in anatomic pathology
management. Works with section management to develop short and long term goals
and plans, and modify operational protocols. Resolves operational and staff
problems or conflicts. Participates in clinical and quality improvement
initiatives.


Performs other duties as required or assigned.








Minimum Qualifications:

ü  Bachelor’s degree in science and
successful completion of an approved Pathologists’ Assistant program or
equivalent. 

 

Required Licensure/Certification Skills:

ü  AAPA registered or eligible.
