PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Mass incarceration continues to be a significant public health and public safety issue in the United States. At the beginning of the 21st century, there was growing excitement and energy surrounding programs designed to aid the transition from prison to the community. Now well over a decade later, innovations in prisoner reentry programs have fallen into a rut as most found to only have a negligible impact on recidivism and mass incarceration because the programs simply cannot meet the growing demands on reentry services.

In order to disrupt the current state of poor outcomes for prisoner reentry, a team lead by the Institute for Justice Research and Development (IJRD) researchers identified and are refining a program that addresses five key ingredients to successful reentry entitled the 5-Key Model for Reentry Program. This manual is build on a review of over 100,000 program evaluations. Using the most cutting-edge research available, we selected the most potent interventions and combined them into one reentry program manual. The 5-Key Model for Reentry Program focuses on the social mobility and well-being of formerly incarcerated individuals to ensure individuals will remain crime-free and contribute positively to society. Research indicated that a focus on motility and well-being maximizes public health and public safety.

The IJRD team is currently researching and refining the 5-Key Model for Reentry Program using a demonstration project in seven states. We are conducting this research in collaboration with the Safe Streets and Second Chances (S3C) Initiative. The research entails a randomized controlled trial and involves researchers and practitioners in its implementation and refinement process.

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Project Support Associate position supports the research project by contacting, scheduling, coordinating appointments as well as conducting interviews with the study participants.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Contacts, schedules, and coordinates appointments with formerly incarcerated individuals who are part of the 5-Key Model for Reentry Project. Continues outreach efforts until a participant is contacted and updates the locator forms accordingly. Maintains databases in Excel and other research methods to assist with participants tracking. This includes recording of contact attempts in the project data management system.Assists project staff with tracking participants as they release from prison into the community. The duties include, but are not limited to, regular phone calls to participants, family, or significant others, mailing post cards and/or letters, and accompanying team members on site visits. Determines best strategies for participant outreach methods.Recruits and enrolls study participants both within and outside of prisons, to include but not limited to, community partner sites, participants homes, and public settings. Explains the purpose of the study and obtains informed consent from the participants. Administers computerized assisted personal interviews with participants on behavioral health measures and clinical assessments both within and outside of prisons.Closely track and maintain contact with study participants once they are released from prison to ensure follow-up interviews are completed. Follow-up interviews may take place in community partner sites, participants homes, and public settings. Maintains appropriate record keeping and organization of all interview data, including data entry.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or related counseling field and one year of expereince or a high school diploma or equevalent and expereince equal to five years. (NOTE: or a post high school education and expereince equal to five years)Experience with maintaining accurate records and retrieve files from active or archive sourcesExperience gathering, interpreting, reporting, and/or editing information.

• Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships while providing effective customer service.


• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.


• Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions.


• Experience listening and recording accurate information.
Must have ability to adapt to flexible hours and be available to work some evenings and weekends.Must be able to work independently while collaborating with a larger team. Must have and maintain valid driver's license.

Preferred

Knowledge of behavioral health, trauma, employment, community stability and or well-being evaluation instruments.Skills in assessment and treatment of persons from diverse populations

Soft Money Funded Position

This position is time-limited based on soft money funding, with renewal contingent upon available funds and the needs of the University.
