The Department of Surgery is currently seeking a Sr. Manager, Research Support. The incumbent in this position evaluates, develops, and directs the processes, policies, procedures, and strategic objectives to streamline and enhance research and grant administration activities within the department. Strategy planning with the Vice Chair of Research with the focus on moving the research divisions and centers into the top 10 in NIH funding. This includes the development of new policies and procedures to ensure the efficient operation of the divisions, routinely evaluating current policies to continually improve operations, identifying synergies within and outside the department, and searching grant opportunities and matching such opportunities with faculty members. Develops quarterly high-level sponsored reports, which summarizes research activity within the department over time. These reports include but are not limited to pending grants, grant submissions, and awards (Federal, State, and Private) by division and/or principal investigator. Maintains knowledge of and assure departmental compliance with UM policies along with policies and procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements and accreditation standards (Human Research Committee, Animal care and Use Committee, and other University Committees). Ensures that Investigators are in compliance with Federal, NIH, and sponsoring agencies, and enforces compliance with these policies by providing relevant information to investigators and review of the status of their respective projects. Prepares and distributes reports demonstrating grant spending including run rates and unexpended/unencumbered amounts assuring that investigators are appropriately using extramural funding before start up funding. Oversees departmental clinical trial activity serving as the primarily administrative point of contact for research initiatives. Provides direct supervision of departmentally based-research, database personnel. Manages research space for the department and assures that departmental assigned space is properly accounted for in the USpace database. Ensures that quarterly effort certification reports and effort grant reporting are accurately and timely submitted to Research Administration. Assists investigators and research staff in certifying the sponsored effort correctly on a quarterly basis. Serves as the primary liaison with the UM Research Administration, Research Finance, Accounts Payable, CRIS, Cancer Center Administration and other departments. Represents particular needs of investigators and works to ensure that these needs are met. As needed, oversees special projects for the wide variety of program support and analytical duties in support of research. Participates on various university research councils, committees and/or research organizations.

The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related field; Master's degree preferred





Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • Five years of work experience in a leadership role with broad exposure to research management
