Provides strategic direction and oversight for SSM Health coding function - including hospital and professional coding staff (team size: ~300). Develops and implements coding strategies to drive highly effective coding function with strategies that evolve to remain contemporary to industry.
Job Responsibilities and Requirements:
Designs coding function for best practice service delivery. Establishes, implements and manages productivity and quality measures; manages staff performance based upon established standards.
Defines tools to measure progress and ensures consistent achievement of business objectives for the department. Leverages technology to support work of coders at 'top of license'.
Establishes coding policies, guidelines and procedures; implements necessary structure to ensure compliance with regulation as well as organizational policy. Drives standardization of practices and procedures related to Coding. Determines performance objectives/metrics.
Leads management and staff for all SSM coding activities; creates positive work environment. Allocates resources, determines staffing levels and budgeting. Forms and ensures effectiveness of staff training program with ongoing competency evaluation. Provides development opportunities and other opportunities for staff growth. Creates team environment and engagement strategies for largely remote workforce.
Responds to industry change in coding guidance, technology solutions and best practices.
Creates and oversees operating budgets for SSM coding function. Manages to budgeted targets. Seeks innovative ways to reduce operating expenses and develops the necessary programs to deliver cost-effective services and products.
Analyzes and evaluates data to better improve procedures, systems and set standards for improvement. Keeps abreast of health care industry trends and provides feedback regarding opportunities for growth and performance improvement.
Works collaboratively across SSM Health organization - including system and regional leadership - for coordination, effectiveness, and efficiency in the Coding department.
Fosters and builds relationships with partners within and outside the organization, including creating partnerships with medical group leadership and providers of SSM Health.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ten years' experience with seven years' in leadership
Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
