Job Description:

OU Physicians is Oklahoma’s largest physician group and encompasses almost every adult and child specialty.
 
POSITION INFORMATION: Provides technical and professional health care in a particular medical specialty under the general guidance of a physician.  Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in a designated patient population or specialty.  
 
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 
 



  1. Physician Assistance.  Assists physician during the examination as needed.  Ensures that all information is available to the physician.  Accompanies physician on rounds and keeps informed of special orders concerning patients. 



  2. Sample Collection.  Collects samples from patients including blood, urine, etc.  Prepares samples for analysis or shipment.



  3. Information Gathering.  Takes and records various readings such as heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, body temperature, etc.



  4. Patient Follow Up.  Makes follow up patient appointments, or follows up on patient appointments.  Answers routine questions from patients, family, etc.



  5. Data Collection.  Collects all laboratory reports, data, and records.



  6. Medication Administration.  Under direction of physician or other medical personnel, administers medication to patients.



  7. Collaboration.  Collaborates with other healthcare professionals to provide efficient quality patient care.  Evaluates and improves teaching and nursing practices and recommends modifications.



  8. Patient Education.  Provides educational information to patients, family, etc.



  9. Emergency Response.  Responds to and intervenes in emergency situations such as anaphylaxis, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hemorrhage, respiratory distress, etc.



  10. Personnel Supervision. Assumes lead role to ensure policies, procedures, and physician’s orders are followed.  Directs and evaluates the work of some personnel that may include Clinic Clerks, Medical Assistants, and other Nurses.  Trains and schedules workloads of employees.



  11. Patient Assessment.  Assesses and monitors patient response to procedures and treatments.  Reports patient condition and reaction to tests, drugs, treatments, and any significant incidents to the physician.



  12. Specialized Testing.  Performs specialized testing using physician-guided protocols such as Captopril suppression, water deprivation, etc.



  13. Instruction.  Instructs medical personnel in the use of highly specialized research equipment, drugs, etc.



  14. Counseling.  Counsels patients and family about death, side effects of medication, therapy, etc.



  15. Research.  Participates in and contributes to research activities that are related to the area of specialization in which they are involved.  Participates in conferences pertaining to the research area.   



  16. As Needed.  Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.  


Education:  Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
 
Experience:  12 months related professional nursing (RN) experience in the designated specialty
 
Certifications/ Licenses:  State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse Certification, BLS, and CPR certification 
 
Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and 24 months experience as a professional nurse (RN) in an assigned healthcare specialty (36 month total)
