Chief Editor, Audience & Engagement, Nature

Location: London, New York and Washington DC

Science and science journalism are more important than ever, and Nature represents the very best. We are hiring an editor to grow and engage our digital audience with our world-leading journalism and opinion articles. 

You will strategically grow Nature’s global audience of working scientists and build a meaningful relationship with them. You will run our social media channels, oversee our highly successful daily newsletter, and pounce on fresh opportunities to understand and engage our users. Editors will rely on you to provide analytic data on user behaviour that guides commissioning and strategy, and to stay abreast of developments in digital publishing. 

 

In return, you’ll get to work with a friendly, smart, dedicated team of science editors and reporters, and reach an audience that includes several million social media followers and that generates some 7 million page views per month.

You must have significant experience working in digital audience growth and engagement, proficiency using social media platforms and audience analytic tools including Google Analytics, plus excellent time management and interpersonal skills. Management and newsroom experience, as well as a love of science, are an advantage - but not required.

Key tasks

• Develop and lead strategy to drive increased usage of, and engagement with, Nature’s journalism and opinion content on all digital platforms in order to generate value for subscribers and grow Nature’s reputation and brand. 

• Develop and lead the use of analytic tools to assess the reach and impact of our content. 


• Work to strategically develop Nature Briefing and other newsletters to ensure they add subscriber and reputational value.

• Run Nature’s high-profile social media channels, posting strategically to grow engagement, usage, loyalty and impact.  

• Champion and advocate audience growth and engagement for Nature’s team of journalists and opinion editors, identifying opportunities and reporting on their performance. 

• Stay abreast of developments and best practices in digital publishing, audience growth and engagement; identify new opportunities and emerging trends; encourage experimentation. 

• Supervise and direct members of Nature’s small audience and engagement team. 


• Curate Nature’s website.


• Build relationships with colleagues in Product and Platform group, Analytics, Editorial and Marketing to support Nature’s goals.
