This position oversees the production of Higher Education titles with large illustration programs and complex texts. The production-editorial processes for these books are highly complex, involving coordination of many activities (e.g., copyediting, art production, design, author relations) on tight, and sometimes conflicting, schedules. Primary job requirements are to coordinate activities of the author; OUP departments such as Editorial, Design, Marketing, and Manufacturing; and outside resources such as typesetters, freelancers, illustrators, etc. to produce products to OUP’s quality standards and to meet planned schedules and budgets. The position will also oversee the external project management of a small number of titles.

ABOUT THE ROLE

1 Use project management skills to coordinate the schedules and budgets of assigned content, focusing on challenging and/or high revenue products, making decisions about priorities and resolving issues as they arise, so that products of appropriate quality are available for the market at the right time and cost.

2 Commission, brief, and manage the copy-editing, proofreading, and indexing of each product by freelancers as necessary to comply with budget and schedule requirements and to meet appropriate quality standards.

3 Commission, brief, and monitor the typesetting and conversion of content by pre-press suppliers for publication in digital and print formats so that published content meets appropriate budget, schedule, and quality standards.

4 Coordinate design processes to ensure that covers and text designs are delivered to schedule; coordinate artwork process to ensure illustrations meet appropriate budget and quality standards.

5 Maintain clear and open communication with authors, project partners, and stakeholders, so that project status and Content Operations requirements are clear; expectations are managed in line with cost and schedule considerations; and authors report a positive experience of working with OUP Content Operations.

6 Oversee external supplier project management of a select number of titles, supporting project managers in day-to-day production activities and problem-solving, such that products meet expected schedule, budget, and quality standards.

7 Update and maintain tracking tools and systems as events occur so that accurate project information is available at all times.

8 Engage with business process transformations, participating in project groups where required, so that Content Operations workflows continue to adapt to the changing publishing environment and offer the best possible value to the business.

9 Support peers in the production process by answering queries and participating in problem-solving; coordinate and deliver training on CO workflow tasks to new starters, so that skills and knowledge are shared among the team.

ABOUT YOU

  • Wide-ranging experience of managing print and digital production processes for a variety of product types, including an understanding of copy-editing and proofreading processes and ability to manage freelancers, suppliers, and external project managers
  • High degree of literacy, numeracy, and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, including experience of working with authors
  • Excellent prioritization and organization skills, including the ability to manage a busy workload with strict deadlines
  • Good IT skills, including standard Microsoft Office package, and ability to learn about and use new technologies
  • Demonstrates flexibility and initiative in problem-solving
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment, while working independently on projects
  • Ability to mentor and train team members in production tasks
