Job Description:

The Sr. Scientist, Upstream Process Development (USPD) has strong working knowledge of microbial systems, bacterial metabolism, protein expression and current bioprocessing technologies. The Sr. Scientist, USPD has a proven track record of developing processes for expression of recombinant proteins using microbial fermentation systems. Critical thinking with a continuous improvement mind-set and the ability to develop and troubleshoot expression methods is a must. The Sr. Scientist, USPD will be primarily responsible for developing processes that can be scaled from shake flasks to 1000-L scale microbial fermentations.

Responsibilities


  • Independently develop processes for expression of recombinant proteins from microbial expression systems

  • Optimize expression systems to provide the most recombinant protein that can still be purified by the downstream processing methods

  • Devise fermentation production processes that can be scaled from sub-liter shake flask cultures to 1000-L bioreactors

  • Actively collaborate with upstream manufacturing to improve process robustness and performance

  • Identify and evaluate new technologies for fermentation and recombinant protein expression

  • Draft and execute research plans, including timeline and budget

  • Serve as a technical resource to Aldevron colleagues and clients

  • Organize technical data into scientific reports and effectively communicate to internal colleagues and external clients

  • Review and approve SOPs and Batch Record forms for fermentation processes

  • Assist in the technical transfer of fermentation processes from process development to research grade and GMP manufacturing

  • Lead the USPD team and serve as SME for all USPD-related discussions

  • Mentor and train team members

  • Productively work on multiple projects simultaneously

  • Accurately record experimental results in real-time

  • Demonstrate high ethical standards, good judgement and trustworthiness

Required Skills


  • Proficient with Quality Management Systems, familiarity with ISO certified labs and GMP working environments

  • Great attention to detail

  • Ability to maintain accurate lab documentation

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office

Must-Haves


  • Degree in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or a closely related field

    • B.S. and 10+ years of relevant work experience

    • M.S. and 6+ years of relevant work experience

    • Ph.D. and 2+ years of relevant work experience



  • Extensive, hands-on experience with microbial fermentation methods:

    • Operating bench-top and lab-scale bioreactors

    • Developing batch and fed-batch fermentation processes

    • Execute upstream design of experiment (DOE) utilizing multi-reactor systems



  • Experience with typical fermentation analytical testing, like gas or sugar analysis

  • Experience with Ambr systems and Sartorius bioreactors and the software for the process controllers

  • Experience with pilot-scale bioreactors and harvest systems

  • Experience with microbial fermentation to express recombinant proteins

  • Experience with various promoter systems and expression plasmids

  • Experience with USPD equipment, ie DASGIP System, Ambr
