Job Description:

The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a Head of Network News for the new Scripps national networks business. This person will serve as the driving force of enterprise journalism for the division, responsible for creating and executing a news and programming strategy across each of our news brands with an emphasis on journalistic excellence, audience engagement, and production quality. Develops and implements news and content-related strategies across multiple platforms. Fosters integrity, creativity, excellence, and visionary thinking, with a passion for serving the evolving news consumer. This individual can reside in one of the following Scripps markets: Cincinnati, Atlanta, Clearwater, and New York.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:


  • Responsible for the programming of Newsy and CourtTV, delivering on ratings and audience growth


  • Develop news and content strategies that maintain the highest levels of journalism and ethical standards across Scripps national news brands Court TV and Newsy


  • Ensure brands contribute to the nation’s civil discourse and public dialogue


  • Oversee news and content initiatives that drive ratings and audience growth


  • Engage brands in ongoing news literacy initiatives that contribute to an informed and engaged populace and attracts smart, active consumers of news and information


  • Oversee production of impactful, quality journalism that will advance the mission of investigative and enterprise reporting to improve the lives of those served by our news outlets Advocate for cameras in the courtroom and oversee production of compelling, relevant storytelling about the significant legal cases of our time and the people involved in them


  • Develop strategies to increase audience engagement through content on-air, online, mobile, and social networking/marketing, creating and maximizing channels for meaningful connections with audiences


  • Support the CEO and other senior leaders in advancing the profession of journalism and its work, the First Amendment, and the Scripps mission


  • Support cooperative partnership between Scripps’ local and national divisions for newsgathering and content sharing


  • Direct and ensure the timely availability of important resources, talent, and equipment


  • Interact with senior management with plans and strategies impacting newsgathering and production initiatives


  • Contribute to establishing and executing the National Networks division priorities and goals


  • Provide leadership, direction, vision, and sound management practices and policies to the news/editorial and productions staffs


  • Support the bureau chief at the Scripps Washington Bureau in developing a working relationship between newsrooms and the national investigative team in Washington


  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with other media industry professionals; partner with HR to identify the top news leaders in the industry


  • Collaborate with the head of programming to develop opportunities for news-related programming concepts that would exist outside of the Court TV and Newsy branded environments


  • Oversee division-wide purchasing decisions for negotiated content, services, etc.


WHAT YOU'LL NEED:


  • BS/BA degree in Journalism, Communications or related field is required, advanced degree preferred


  • 15+ years’ experience as a leader in the media industry creating, developing, and managing news content including large and diverse staffs

  • Proven journalism excellence and success in areas of news quality, innovative coverage, presentation and investigative journalism.


  • Demonstrated multiplatform leadership with ability to establish a clear, long-term plan that is a direct reflection of the business strategy.


  • Solid understanding of changing consumption habits of news consumers.


  • Proven ability to establish trusted relationships with executives and peers, to influence others, build census and to promote collaboration.


  • Commitment to promoting a professional and respectful work environment with a focus on ethics and integrity.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

  • 40% - 50% travel required
