Senior Coastal Engineer at Moffatt & Nichol

Moffatt & Nichol is actively searching for a Coastal Engineer with 15+ years of experience to join our Raleigh office with experience in planning and design for Waterfront and Coastal Structures projects, including marinas, waterfront developments; coastal and wetland restoration, dredging, shore protection structures, and floodwalls. The right candidate will help build a business around their own area of coastal expertise, have their own contacts in the local market, and be a part of the local and national leadership team that drives this service line for Moffatt & Nichol.

Ideally, the best candidate will have established business skills in delivering a portfolio of aligned services, skilled in people management and development, have strong written and verbal communications, be proficient in executing corporate policy, experienced in marketing and proposal writing, demonstrates leadership skills, and/or potential. Primary responsibilities will include the following:

Duties and responsibilities:


  • Work closely with Business Unit Leader, Sr. Staff, and National Water Practice Leader in continuing to develop and implement the growth strategy for the business and expand the businesses client network

  • Supports Coastal / Water practice through contacts and ongoing business development efforts

  • Works with EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, local environmental agencies, as well as private sector clients

  • Leads manage and contribute technical oversight for coastal projects, including:

  • wetland restoration, dredging, waterfront structures, coastal and environmental protection initiatives, and ecological surveys

  • Implements scientific and regulatory tasks for projects in order to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies, including NEPA, SEPA, Endangered Species Act, and Clean Water Act

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree Civil, Ocean, or Environmental Engineering (required); MS Coastal Engineering (preferred)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (required)

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in the Coastal Engineer Consulting industry (required)

  • Strong Project/Program Management experience (required)

  • Successfully supported ongoing Coastal / Water practice through local contacts and business development efforts

  • Experience with sophisticated design methods and principles utilizing a statistical approach to hydraulic loading, storm surge levels, and associated waves.

  • Project experience should include:

    • Coastal restoration projects

    • Water monitoring and sampling solutions

    • Water quality assessments

    • Field collections



  • Software experience should include:

    • Matlab (required)

    • Delft3D (required)

    • DHI Mike modeling suite (required)

    • SOBEK (preferred)

    • RMA

    • WAQUA



  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post-offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Sit for long periods of time, interact with clients, and travel occasionally.
