You think in systems and care about the way a designfeelsandworks.You care deeply aboutmaking sure theAPIinterface isintuitive,functional, usable, and offers a positive experience for developers.You're comfortable with the idea of helping the team achieve business OKRs and you work with technical roles, to make sure your design helps the team meet the technical KPIs, too. You're comfortable working directly with API consumers andareproudto take on the "voice of the consumer" when helping the team make decisions about the look and feel of the API. Finally, you ensure the overall design matches established company-wide style guidelines.

Your workflow is flexible and evolves and adapts for each project. Youare independently motivated,and alwayslearning;readingindustry books, keeping up with talks, blogs,and social media to remain up to date on new tech and best practices.

What you'll do

As an API Design Engineer in the Experience Design R&D division at SAS, you will contribute to major projectsbuilt onRESTful APIs,whetherAPIaaSorAPIaaP.You will define patterns, recommend consistent best practices, and adhere tostandards(such asOpenAPI3); these are top concerns in your designs.

You will actively contribute toSAS'API First Program, which is thegovernanceand enablementarm of all API work at SAS. Knowledge, passion, and experiencedesigningRestful APIs iscrucial.

With the support of your coreAPIsystem architects,UI engineers,andUXteammates, and in collaboration with Development,Documentation,and Product Management, you will helpfoster goodAPIDesign.

You will:

    Conduct, facilitate, andadvocate for APIrelated user research,designworkshops, and usability testing.
  • Serve as a bridge between design,development, and documentationteams.

  • Advocate for design in the enterprise; both internally and externally via our Medium publication and other web presences.

  • Collaborate withproductmanagementto validate desiredfunctionality.

  • Leverage user data andresearch, both quantitative and qualitative, to make decisionsand(surveys, usability tests, feedback from support).

  • See the world and our products through the eyes of our users and designing to meet their mentalmodels.

What we're looking for


  • You're curious, passionate, authentic, and accountable. These are our values and influence everything we do.

  • You have a bachelor's degree in computer science,human-computerinteraction,graphicdesign, UX/UI design, or in a related design or front-end related field.

  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing user interfaces and prototypes usingUCDmethodologies.

  • Experience with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

  • A digital portfolio of examples of your work will be required.

The nice to haves


  • Experience with:

    • Stoplight Studio or other Visual API Design tools.

    • Developingcomplex designsystems.

    • JS libraries/frameworkslike React, Angular, Vue.

    • Scripting languages, such as Python, Ruby, others.

    • Designing responsive user interface across different devices (web, mouse/touch, mobile).

    • Designing with accessibility and localization inmind.

    • Mobile user interface design (Apple HIG, Google Material,others).



  • Workflow includes testing and documentation.

  • Portfolio examples of compelling web/app experiences (see asterisk below).

  • Visualdesign skills, strong interest/knowledge of typography.

  • Interest or familiarity with the JAMStack, and related tools/SSGs, such as 11ty, Gatsby, Next.js, Nuxt.js, others.
