What you will do

The Sr Design Engineer, Fire Alarms position is part of our Building Technologies & Solutions business with Johnson Controls. We are searching for a seasoned design engineer to assist with Fire Alarm design solutions for customer's commercial buildings throughout the US. This is a remote position.

The Johnson Controls Technology and Solutions Engineering team provides pre-sales system and project development engineering services for large complex building projects. We develop and deliver Leading building, business and vertical market solutions and engineering expertise driving value for sales partners and customers. The team brings a consultative and service-oriented approach; as well as engineering development discipline through standard processes and tools. Serving all of Johnson Controls’ priority vertical markets and sales channels in North America, the Sr Design Engineer position is an integral part of our digital growth strategy. 

As a key member of the System Development Engineering team, you will partner with some of the best minds in the industry to create innovative solutions focused on customers' needs.  Will help deliver on aggressive growth objectives, driving higher product value and margin.  Our high-performing team needs you to bring your expertise to complement and further differentiate our industry-leading offerings. The business supports Controls, Fire and Security projects. This position will focus on Fire projects throughout the US.

How you will do it

Supports the sales team in closing sales by designing and engineering creative, innovative and sound technical fire solutions, including related cost estimating. Performs fire risk assessments and audits of facilities of major accounts to identify areas of existing and potential fire risks. Makes recommendations to customer and sales team for cost effective solutions to mitigate any identified risk.

Assists the proposal team in initiating requests for information and assuring compliance with project specifications and applicable codes and standards (NFPA, BOCA, etc.). Assures that the project plan and design complies with the specification.

Maintains relationships with key local fire suppliers and stays abreast of all new fire technologies.

As an active member, contributes to the Systems Development Team by providing technical direction necessary to achieve the goals and objectives of the project and developing cost efficient solutions that meet the customer requirements. Gathers all necessary information and data to build the technical solution.

Contributes to the profitable growth of the area by understanding the market opportunities and the job considerations for construction. Recommends comprehensive fire offerings that will increase market share and exceed customers’ expectations. Communicates JCI’s technical value proposition to the sales team and customer.

Continually assesses risk during each phase of the project. Regularly updates sales and operations team(s) on current and potential risks and impacts. Recommends appropriate mitigation activities.

Participates in turnover meetings with the assigned Project Manager. Ensures that the Project Manager understands the technical solutions sold. Provides all documentation and specification related details.

Assists the sales team in presenting technical fire solutions to the customer.

Project responsibilities include pre-sales design support, cost development, applications engineering and product selection, specification interpretation and development, subcontractor RFP generation, subcontractor evaluation, proposal development and team coordination, risk management strategies, value engineering, customer satisfaction and project success.

Uses standard JCI development processes and tools in performing role and responsibilities.

Participates in NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and other relevant fire professional organizations.

Obtains relevant professional certifications and licenses.

Promotes adherence to JCI safety policies.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

What we look for
Required 


  • Requires a minimum of NICET Level III certification

  • Solid computer skills, including an understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Project. 

  • Must be able to work independently, have good verbal and communication skills, think conceptually, possess a strong work ethic, and be willing to travel 25% of the time.


Preferred 


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in engineering, or equivalent fire system engineering experience. 

  • Seven to ten years of experience with fire projects and a demonstrated ability to analyze and quantify fire projects. 

  • Specific vertical market industry experience is desired. Able to develop a business case including an understanding of business finance. 

  • General knowledge of CAD, estimating, and project management.
