 Chemical & Industrial Engineering, Inc., (C&I), is a full service engineering/design/consulting firm providing multi-discipline services to the oil & gas industries, food & beverage industries, and others industrial companies.  C&I was established in 1983.  We have multiple offices located in Kentucky, Texas and Illinois.

 Position Overview:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be part of the Mechanical Team preparing technical reports and studies and design documents, performing calculations using engineering software and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment and support systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in process system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets that incorporate the applicable design and safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.

 Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Identifies and presents project-level alternatives to multi-discipline design issues.  Initiates discussion within the project team to arrive at design solutions that give the best value for a limited constructed cost.

  • Prepares complete design packages, including construction scope of work, for complex projects that meet design intents and customer expectations.  Designs are well coordinated with other departments.

  • Researches national and local codes, interprets grey areas and recommends appropriate design to meet requirements.

  • Confers or meets with code officials to review project plans and secure permits.

  • Initiates and controls coordination efforts for areas of technical responsibility on projects. Resolves coordination conflicts effectively, negotiating win-win solutions to multi-discipline project design issues.

  • Contacts clients independently to obtain information or resolve design issues.  Identifies work opportunities with existing clients.  Participates in Business Development activities – trips, presentations, etc.  Initiates social interaction with clients outside of normal business situations.

  • Develops independent quality plan to supplement normal project execution plan when appropriate.  Ensures accuracy, completeness and consistency in the work produced in concert with project team objectives and customer expectations.

  • Ensures designs are constructable.  Understands construction techniques, limitations and relative costs.

  • Serves as a mentor to junior staff.  Assists in training and development of others.  Identifies training needs to department chief.  Develops and presents training seminars on technical subjects for the department.

  • Creates technical (equipment, material, performance, services) specifications and data sheets for unique, multi-discipline applications.  Solicits and incorporates technical input from other departments.

  • Provides input for construction sequence requirements (Pre-TAR, TAR, Post-TAR).

  • Creates lists of engineering deliverables and tasks, and estimates effort hours for same, based on limited scopes of work for complex projects.

  • Monitors and reports progress against engineering schedules and budgets. Independently takes corrective actions to meet plan.

  • Plans field trips and coordinates with Plant Operations, Maintenance and Engineering to gather field information for project team.  Establishes detailed project scope based on preliminary scope and evaluation of field conditions.  Troubleshoots and recommends solutions to resolve operational (non-project) issues.

  • Identifies, communicates and manages changes to project scopes.  Recognizes impact of changes on other departments and constructed cost.

  • Creates plan of execution for large and complex projects, anticipating the sequence of tasks, long lead and special items for engineering procurement cycle, and dependencies of information from others.  Works within project team to integrate department plan into a multi-discipline project plan of execution.

  • Prepares computer analyses and calculations.

  • Uses C&I’s Engineering Instructions and Project Management Instructions and follows Project Procedures Manual. 

  • Prepares MTOs and verifies accuracy of capital cost estimates.

  • Uses vendor documents, coordination prints, surveys and models to check dimensions, determine interface points, determine physical space requirements, and provide information to other departments etc.

  • Evaluates technical aspects of bids. Coordinates with Procurement to clarify proposals and resolve deficiencies, ensuring compliance with requisition.

Basic Qualifications:


  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 10 years of related experience. 

  • Understanding of construction roles, practices, and economics. Practical work experience in equipment design and procurement. Ability to utilize office automation tools effectively.

  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards, Comprehensive knowledge of the application of Mechanical engineering design principles.

  • Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, Excel).

  • Professional Registration in Mechanical Engineering in USA.
