Project Engineer - Mechanical (Wind) at Liberty Utilities (Canada) Corp

Purpose


This position is responsible for Mechanical Engineering within the multi-disciplined Operations Engineering group. The role will provide expertise based on education and experience for Wind generation assets as part of the Operations Engineering group to ensure the long term reliable operation, profitability and safety of the assets. This position will also manage engineering / maintenance capital projects for Liberty Power as needed, as well as provide support to hydro, solar, and thermal assets.


Accountabilities


Engineering support


  • Provide mechanical engineering knowledge and expertise for safe and reliable operation and maintenance of the wind generation portfolio of Liberty Power.

  • Provide mechanical engineering technical guidance and assistance to project managers within the Operations Engineering team.

  • Participate, conduct, and/or coordinate analysis related to mechanical equipment wear and failures, including tracking and monitoring major component repairs.

  • Develop and communicate technical opinions with respect to root cause of wind turbine component failures.

  • Perform technical evaluation and analysis of emerging wind turbine technology for improvements in safety, energy performance, equipment inspection and reliability, and lifecycle assessment.



Technical/Operational Support


  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues associated with the installation and operation of various wind turbine technology and mechanical sub systems (rotor, blades, main shaft, main bearing, gearbox, hydraulic system, cooling systems, yaw system, tower, bolted connections, etc.)

  • Lead troubleshooting exercises and support of Field Operations staff during unplanned outages

  • Obtaining all the necessary data for problem solving, including condition monitoring system reports, defining and/or executing site investigations, reviewing design features of equipment, evaluation of maintenance repair and rehabilitation methods, availability of equipment and materials

  • Analyze operating data on an as needed basis (at the request of stakeholders or based on production variances) to determine trends and identify concerns including conducting or coordinating consequential root cause reviews. Review inspection reports, equipment test results, commissioning documents, quality assurance documentation, as-built drawings, etc.



Project Planning & Execution


  • Provide project planning services for technology based projects including preparing; (1) scope of work definition, (2) budget estimating, and (3) project scheduling for the purpose of project justification and obtaining project approval.

  • Execute small to intermediate projects related to equipment repair, replacement or retrofits

  • Effectively communicate project status, risks and opportunities, and cost / schedule performance to stakeholders.


Miscellaneous


  • Interface and manage external contractors, service providers, consultants, and original equipment manufacturers including the preparation of scope of work and request for proposal documents, evaluating proposals, executing commercial paperwork, and managing the work.

  • React to changes in work assignments and priority and undertake all other tasks as assigned.

  • Perform all work treating worker and public safety as paramount and in compliance with all environmental and other regulatory requirements.


Education and Experience



  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and years of experience.

  • Professional Engineer as local jurisdiction requires

  • Experienced in renewable power generation with preference in Wind industry

  • Technical understanding of rotating equipment, aerodynamics, and/or composite materials relative to wind turbine generators with specialist-level knowledge in one or more of these topics.

  • Experience with the design, application, service and operation of wind turbine mechanical systems and their failure modes.

  • Must have a high aptitude for technical learning and information assimilation noting there is not an expectation that the individual will be an expert in all areas of power generation utilized by Liberty Power but that they will be able to develop the expertise as, and when required including acknowledging when outside expertise resources should be engaged, and identifying and procuring those resources as need.

  • Must have strong communication skills for the purpose of sharing and transferring critical developed expertise to others as needed, as well as communicating and defending technology based opinions, recommendations, and decisions.

  • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of renewable energy operations, best practices and industry safety standards

  • Must be disciplined, as often the role is self-guided and self-managing with challenging performance expectations and measures.

  • Must have a basic understanding of worker and public safety issues and environmental regulations.

  • Must have the ability to succeed in Liberty Power provided safety training including practical and table top training, and working at heights training.

  • Must hold a valid driver's license and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account.

  • Must be able and flexible to travel within Canada and the United States as needed (Up to 30%).
