Newsy is seeking a writer who loves to take complicated stories and turn them into works of art, making a story come to life through concise, compelling and conversational writing. The writer will work with live show teams to write short and long-form news headlines and expanded stories to build out a program that appeals to the Newsy viewer: a news consumer who wants information, not opinions. Newsy’s mission is to inform and not influence, and the ideal candidate deeply understands the distinction between the two.
The ideal writer has experience contributing to a live news program, can work quickly and efficiently under pressure, has excellent news judgment and can jump into any assigned news headline to deliver strong content. The ability to juggle several stories at once while taking ownership of those stories as they grow through the day is absolutely essential. The ideal writer can handle additional writing assignments as needed, such as opens and teases. Additional segment producing responsibilities may be considered.
The ideal candidate should be able to work efficiently with graphics producers and video editors to build out each story to be as visually compelling as possible. Additionally, working under “breaking news” deadlines is a vital skill for this position.
The writer will report to the supervising producer.
What you'll do:
Research, write and produce content for live news programs
Write headlines for “headline roundups” that appear on Newsy, its platforms and its E.W. Scripps sister stations
Write short- and long-form stories, as assigned, to enhance live news programs

Write “breaking news” quickly, efficiently, and factually sound under tight deadlines
Write copy that is concise and conversational, factually sound and solutions-focused, free of grammar errors
Edit and clip segments for broadcast and digital distribution on Newsy properties
Assist in the development of recurring segment production across several news and special programs
Pitch compelling brand-minded segments and story ideas in weekly planning meetings
Work with Booking Producer to conduct guest- or collaborator-based research and pre-interviews
