Associate Director, Advanced Fluidic Systems – Research & Technology Development
The Associate Director of Advanced Fluidic Systems leads the cross-disciplinary team responsible for the microfluidics architecture of next generation sequencing systems. This responsibility includes both instrument and integrated cartridge-based microfluidic systems.
The position is in the Advanced Engineering Research group and involves laying the foundation for future cutting-edge products. The team is responsible for the earliest phases of product development including collecting requirements, creation of system concepts, evaluation of candidates, building organizational consensus, and demonstrating feasibility. The ideal candidate will have a breadth of experience and knowledge relating to medical device consumables, specifically around plastic part fabrication and design for manufacturing. A driven creativity and a passion for solving difficult problems in cross-disciplinary teams are crucial, as is the ability to be comfortable with the design equivalent of “a blank page.”
Responsibilities
Recommend and develop new fluidic technologies and architectures that drive the innovation cycle and our product roadmap
Provide innovative solutions to problems which meet customer requirements and support company goals.
Significantly contribute to developing new architectures for high volume medical device consumables that integrates microfluidics, chemistry, and sensing.
Build capabilities in the key technology areas of fluidic systems: valves, pumps, manifolds, sensors, instrument/consumable interfaces, reagent packaging, and system modeling, characterization, and failure analysis
Accelerate the growth of a high-performing engineering team
Lead teams and projects through the concept phase and drive adoption to Product Development
Support technical evaluation of design requirements /constraints and guide teams in developing concepts, evaluating risks, and making effective and timely design decisions
Manage resource allocation effectively across multiple projects. Ability to work and lead project teams across multiple global sites
Drive selection and qualification of critical partners for product development and manufacturing.
Perform analysis in support of key manufacturing decisions, including make/buy and tooling strategies.
Provide technical leadership to project teams, including junior engineers.
Brainstorm new concepts and drive towards down selection and proving out feasibility.
Design, analyze, assemble, and evaluate consumable/disposable devices.
Qualifications
Ph.D. or M.S. in Engineering, Physics, or related field with minimum of 8 years relevant industry experience
Proven track record of cultivating and developing novel technologies into commercial products, from conceptualization to manufacturing transfer
Demonstrated success in building and growing strong, innovative engineering teams
Demonstrated experience in characterization and testing of complex systems, including design of experiments and root cause analysis
Strong skills in Design for Manufacturing; hands-on experience with high-volume manufacturing processes is highly desired
Experience designing plastic parts and assemblies, and managing development of related manufacturing processes, including injection molding and bonding/joining methods
Experience developing products integrating microfluidics, chemistry/assay and sensing components
Experienced in leading or contributing to a structured development process in a highly collaborative cross-disciplinary team environment
Lead teams through design and process parameter optimization to achieve robust, reliable product function with high yield
