Job Description Summary

The Assistant General Counsel (Litigation) will be expected to balance legal and business imperatives in the course of supporting a broad range of litigation, claims, and employment and compliance-related matters for a rapidly growing global hospitality organization. Primary activities will center on protecting the organization’s legal risk through active management of the company’s litigation and pre-litigation matters and guest claims, and implementing litigation management and risk mitigation policies and best practices. The role involves collaboration with the full spectrum of the company’s internal and external stakeholders, including operations, accounting, human resources, and legal teams. The Assistant General Counsel must embrace Sonesta’s principle of providing “Service with Passion” in support of our owners, our guests, and our employees.

Job Description


  • Developing and executing on strategy for the company’s litigation and pre-litigation matters, including identifying and analyzing legal issues; working with local counsel to prepare key documents and memoranda; and seeking proactive solutions to avoid future disputes across the company.

  • Collaborating with the HR team and hotel teams to investigate, defend, and resolve employee concerns, claims, administrative proceedings, arbitrations or grievances.

  • Guiding the Risk Manager and operations teams in the pursuit of resolutions for guest complaints and insurance claims.

  • Directing responsive activities for tenancy-related litigation matters, such as default notices and evictions.

  • Assisting with Legal and HR compliance initiatives, such as trainings and implementation of new programs for corporate and hotel employees.

  • Overseeing responses to subpoenas or other record requests.

  • Assisting with negotiating and advising on rights and obligations under a broad variety of contracts.

  • Such other activities that may arise and that may be necessary or helpful in mitigating risk and protecting the company’s legal interest.

Additional Job Description

A candidate for this Assistant General Counsel (Litigation) position must possess the following relevant knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to demonstrate and provide applicable examples to support his/her competency and experience.


  • J.D. degree.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a litigation and/or employment law practice, preferably at a mid-size or large law firm or comparable government organization.

  • Strong organization and follow-through skills, keen attention to detail, sound judgment and common sense.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including legal writing and advocacy and general communications.

  • Strong people skills to manage potentially confrontational situations, interact with opposing counsel, and coordinate with corporate and hotel team members.

  • Ability to work in a team and independently to produce high quality work product.

  • A drive for success and the ability to thrive in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.

  • Minimal travel may be required.
