The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to be based at our office in Washington, DC. This person is responsible for installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of broadcast/IT systems hardware, software, operating systems, and related infrastructure associated with a live TV broadcast channel.
Key activities
The senior systems engineer is responsible for the enterprise-wide implementation, maintenance and administration of MAC and Windows desktop, Windows servers, and related network infrastructure.
Efficiently and effectively troubleshoot and resolve daily IT issues reported by end-users
Ability to rapidly diagnose Broadcast video & audio systems and provide alternative solutions if needed to maintain production deadlines
Regularly confers with developers, analysts, other system engineers, and users regarding current and prospective systems changes and future needs
Participates in, or independently perform, scheduled or triage after-hours/weekend maintenance activities
Develops and documents all processes and standards and work with other team members to cross train and provide back up and support for technologies within the enterprise
Maintains a positive working relationship with IT technical staff, customers and managed services providers
Education & Experience
Degree/diploma in Engineering, Computer Science, Communication Technology or equivalent experience
7+ years of technology experience, preferably in a broadcast environment
Experience with broadcast/video production and post workflows and standards
Experience with legacy and IP based Broadcast signal routing and design
Knowledge of MAM, SAN, DAM workflows
Knowledge of audio mixing consoles
Scripting and automation skills relative to infrastructure technologies desired
An ability to work on multiple tasks in a high pressure, 24/7 news environment
Demonstrated ability to deliver IT projects on-time and on-budget
Demonstrated experience successfully working in Cross Functional project teams
Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential
Skills & Abilities
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial
Experience in a broadcast or media production environment is a plus
Experience with video encoders and decoders is a plus
Strong knowledge of Apple OS X client and server operating systems
Linux, Windows and Mac system administrator skills
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
Demonstrated ability to deliver a high level of customer service
Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Work Environment:
Overtime hours may be required to meet project deadlines
Sitting for extended periods of time
Ability to lift and install rack-mounted servers and other broadcast equipment
Ability to support remote crews with installing/managing field production and transmission
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects
Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings
Some travel may be required for the purpose of off-site software installation and system startups
