Job Description Summary:

The Principal Scientist, Pharmacology / Biomarkers (Gene Therapy), is responsible for planning and performing scientific experiments that contribute to PTC’s research and drug discovery activities.  The Principal Scientist is also responsible for communicating experimental results to his/her supervisor and the project team.
The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments, and external resources as appropriate, as part of PTC’s discovery science project teams.
The incumbent also supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate.

Job Description:

Primary duties/responsibilities:


  • Independently plans, initiates, directs and executes scientific research and experiments and interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s) results.  This includes, but may not be limited to, experiments in rodents utilizing gene therapy including distribution, behavioral, and non-GLP safety studies. 


  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to research problems.


  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.


  • Must be detail-oriented, organized and keep excellent records


  • Develops and writes protocols, study reports and IND documents as appropriate.


  • Maintains appropriate knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and identifies new project areas or technologies.


  • Abides by all IACUC requirements when working with animals.


  • Abides by all safety requirements.


  • Supervise the activities of other personnel or assume the role of project leader to lead a team on a special project(s).


  • Contributes to general lab needs such as:


  • Equipment maintenance.


  • Capital equipment purchases.


  • Performs other tasks as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED


  • Experience in neurological and/or ocular rodent models of disease.


  • Experience handling mice and rats. This includes, but may not be limited to stereotactic injections, ICV injections, and subretinal injections.


  • Proven scientific writing skills.


  • Represent Pharmacology on a program team and report on studies done in the group.


* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline preferably Molecular Biology, Toxicology, Neuroscience or Biochemistry with 8-10 years’ relevant experience. Some Industry experience is required.

* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.


  • Pharmacology expertise in neurobiology, translational biology, or predictive toxicology.


  • Works on unusually complex technical problem and provides solutions which are highly innovative.


  • Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives.  Assignments are often self-initiated.


  • Exercises independent judgment within defined procedures and practices.


  • Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product.


  • Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought within a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members


  • Manage and mentor a team of scientists in fast paced matrix environment.


  • May oversee academic collaboration and/or be designated as a subcontractor or co-PI on research grants


  • Interviews and contributes to the evaluation of candidates.


  • Possesses detailed and expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.


  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or similar


  • Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.


  • Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.


  • Demonstrates an understanding of the strategic alignment of his/her work with corporate goal(s) and demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.


  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.


*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.


  • Strong experimental background and experience integrating complex scientific ideas in hypothesis-driven biological and translational research preferably to enable clinical biomarker discovery and development


  • Hands on experience with one or more genomic, epigenetic, gene expression, metabolomics, multiplexed protein detection or other related platforms is required


  • Knowledge of biomarker discovery and development: assay development/validation, clinical discovery/application of biomarkers, and translational research


  • Propose biomarker strategy to link preclinical animal data to first in human studies


* Travel requirements

Upto10%. Some travel between the PTC NJ sites is required as needed ( Bridgewater and South Plainfield)
