The Principal Research Scientist will be a recognized leader in their field and a resource to other scientists and clinicians. The individual will work in an area of critical interest to the Department of Surgery and the Chair of the Department of Surgery at AIDHC, especially the development and translation of state of the art approaches based on reconstructive surgery and the application of precepts from biomedical engineering, regenerative medicine, and/or tissue engineering for pediatric applications. The individual will work in conjunction with the Nemours Center for Pediatric Clinical Research and Development (CPCRD) in the Department of Biomedical Research. The individual will serve as a foundational leader and mentor who will help integrate and grow infrastructure that advances basic and translational research along with surgical approaches toward developing novel therapeutics.  

The Principal Research Scientist will oversee the development of a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and translational research program to generate and implement the use of reconstructive and regenerative biomaterials and tissue engineering approaches.  Accordingly, the Principal Research Scientist will pursue and conduct independent and collaborative research.  

The individual will:

•    Develop a core program of mentoring, training, and education for junior faculty, research fellows, and other research trainees in surgery research leading to research independence for those individuals
•    Have a strong track record of research funding
•    Actively participate as a member of study sections
•    Oversee programmatic development of research projects and initiatives that augment the Department of Surgery clinical programs

QUALIFICATIONS:

•    At least 15 years research experience and 10 years independent research; academic rank of Associate or Full Professor
•    Demonstrated ability to publish in scientific journals.  Independent evidence of high regard in their respective field throughout the scientific community
•    Relevant Doctoral level degree.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•    Responsible for building Department of Surgery Research program
•    Undertake and supervise original research. Plan and execute a wide range of projects in basic, translational, and clinical research
•    Oversee the core program of mentoring, training, and educating junior faculty in surgery research
•    Collaborates with partner institutions included but not limited to Universities and commercial partners.
