Director of Environmental Services


Position Summary:


This position is responsible for directing and overseeing the overall operations of the Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Laundry departments in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing the facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator, to assure the facility is maintained in a safe and comfortable manner.


Essential Functions / Areas of Responsibility:


This job description is not intended to be all inclusive; this position must also perform other job responsibilities as assigned.


 



  1. Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Laundry departments, its programs, and activities.

  2. Develop and maintain written policies and procedures for the three departments.

  3. Establish and maintain a preventative maintenance program for the facility.

  4. Develop, maintain, and implement infection control and universal precautions policies and procedures to assure that a sanitary environment is maintained at all times and that aseptic and isolation techniques are followed by all maintenance, housekeeping, and laundry staff.

  5. Inspect storage rooms, work rooms, utility/janitorial closets, etc for upkeep and supply control.

  6. Participate in facility surveys made by authorized government agencies.

  7. Review and develop a plan of correction for maintenance, housekeeping, and/or laundry deficiencies noted during survey inspections and provide a written copy of such to the Administrator.

  8. Serve on various committees of the facility (i.e., Infection Control, Safety, QA, etc.) and provide written/oral reports of maintenance, housekeeping, and laundry services and activities as required by the committee’s guidelines or direction.

  9. Conduct Human Resource duties as needed for the Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Laundry departments.  These duties include but are not limited to, employee paperwork, scheduling, hiring/termination, counseling’s, problem resolutions, etc.)

  10. Assume the responsibility for maintaining your professional competence through participation in programs of continuing education.

  11. Develop and participate in a training program for the staff of the maintenance, housekeeping, and laundry department.

  12. Supervise safety and fire protection and prevention programs by inspecting work areas and equipment at least weekly.

  13. Ensure that all personnel wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies when lifting or moving heavy objects.

  14. Obtain and maintain material safety data sheets (SDSs) for hazardous chemicals in the maintenance, housekeeping, and laundry departments and ensure all staff is trained to use labels and SDSs to recognize hazards and to follow appropriate protective measures.

  15. Endure the containers of hazardous chemicals in these departments are properly labeled and stored.

  16. Make periodic rounds to check equipment and to assure that necessary equipment is available and working properly.

  17. Assist in preparing and planning the Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Laundry budgets for equipment, supplies, and labor and submit to the Administrator for review, recommendations, and approval.

  18. Ensure the cleaning supplies used by the facility for disinfection and decontamination purposes are EPA approved.

  19. Ensure the housekeeping staff follows established policies governing the use/disposal of personal protective equipment and disposal of infectious waste.

  20. Ensure that laundry personnel handle, sort, wash, and distribute laundry and linen in accordance with the facility’s infection control policies and procedures.

  21. Ensure all Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Laundry personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures.

Education Required:  High school diploma and/or trade school preferred.


Experience / Skills needed:


Must be able to lead and motivate people. Must be a positive leader with a confident attitude.           Must be able to organize schedules, people, and supplies. Must have a sense of smell.   Must be able to distinguish odors, chemicals, fire, smoke, etc.  Must be able to distinguish colors.  Must be able to demonstrate the ability to read and write.  Must be in good physical health. Standing, stooping, bending, and lifting are requirements of this job.


Minimum of 5 years knowledge of plant maintenance, and working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, pneumatics, boilers, compressors, generators, and HV/AC system required.  Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints.  Must be knowledgeable of building codes and safety regulations.
