Job Description

The Trader is responsible for the oversight and execution of the Firms cash desk responsibilities. Duties include but are not limited to assisting with the management of various money market and securities lending collateral funds, executing short term fixed income trades, and overnight cash management for the broader suite of Funds. S/he will advise Analysts and Portfolio Managers with ongoing information about market sentiment and the trading environment to assess events in the marketplace and to determine relative value.  In addition, trader will be part of the Investment Grade trading team, which focuses on IG rated corporate debt, Municipal debt, and Preferred securities, within the centralized fixed income trading desk at Manulife Investment Management.

Key Accountabilities:

Individual Accountabilities:


  • Execute trades considering speed, profitability, volume determined in partnership with relevant Portfolio Manager.  Responsible for achieving best price relative to considerations; binds firm with purchase and sale of securities.

  • Researches and communicates valuation of marketable securities to Trading  team and Portfolio Managers. 

  • Recommend appropriate trading levels (price based on market, timing, availability, volume) to relevant Portfolio Managers and Senior traders.

  • Build, maintain and leverage relationships with brokers. Recommends and supports other trading strategies of Senior traders to assist in broader trading efforts and alpha generation .

  • Provide market color/relevant news and their effect on trading levels to Analysts and Portfolio Management in daily morning meeting and throughout the day.

  • Screen bond offerings and determine dealer inventories and pricing.

  • Provide trading levels to Analysts and Portfolio Management for pricing purposes. 

  • Understand the trade settlement process and be able to quickly resolve trade issues with Operations and Settlement teams.

Job Requirements:


  • Bachelors Degree required. CFA and/or MBA desired.

  • Minimum 2-4 years asset management operational experience and 0-3 years direct experience in trading fixed income securities

  • Fundamental understanding of securities and fixed income investments.  (Corporate Bonds:  Investment Grade, High Yield and Distressed, and Emerging Market Securities)

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with Brokers, Portfolio Managers, research Analysts and team members.

  • Strong negotiation skills.

  • Ability to recognize and prioritize competing demands to satisfy business need, including the importance of the pricing variables.

  • Ability to make strong decisions under pressure and to respond quickly to news and change.

  • Able to articulate deal information effectively to senior levels.

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships internally and externally to include banks, investment banks and brokers through exceptional communication and relationship skills.

  • Personal desire and ability to achieve best price.

Decision Authorities:


  • Analyze market for pricing levels of trades; acts after assessment

  • Execute trades, i.e. binds firm for purchase or sale of securities, for portfolios at proper levels

  • Observe and discuss markets and recommend trade ideas to Portfolio Managers, Analysts and Senior Traders.
