At the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL), scientists study atmospheric and other dynamic processes that affect air quality, weather, and climate variability. ESRL researchers monitor the atmosphere, investigate the physical and chemical processes that comprise the Earth system, and integrate those findings into environmental information products. Our work improves critical weather and forecasting tools for the public and private sectors, from hourly forecasts, drought and air quality predictions, to international science assessments with policy-relevant findings. By better understanding the Earth system, we can better understand what drives this afternoon's haze, next month's hurricanes, and our variable climate.

We are seeking a System Administrator to provide IT systems administration, and continued IT operations and monitoring in support of the NOAA ESRL mission. The person selected for this position will be responsible for general support duties for all operating systems, including: assist with direct user support, infrastructure system support, and other systems administration tasks as necessary; will take on issues/tasks that require support across multiple OSs or technologies; monitor help desk queues and advise the PSD IT manager of issues as they arise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • General support duties for all operating systems, including: assist with direct user support, infrastructure system support, and other systems administration tasks as necessary; will take on issues/tasks that require support across multiple OSs or technologies; monitor help desk queues and advise the PSD IT manager of issues as they arise.
  • Serve as a PSD Systems Administration team member, specializing in direct user support, for a wide variety of software, hardware, and network issues.
  • Support end user requests via helpdesk tickets and walk-in interactions.
  • Monitor helpdesk queues, advise PSD IT management if support is languishing or specific issues need management focus.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with other members of the PSD Systems Administration team, the Web and Data Management team, and the IT Security Officer to accomplish their complementary functions.
  • Augment the PSD Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems administrators and the rest of the Systems Administration team in accomplishing their daily tasks.
  • Perform routine changes and updates to desktops, servers, and network infrastructure components.
  • Attend PSD & ESRL IT staff and technical meetings as necessary

Supervisory/Management Authority:

  • This position will /will not have management authority or supervisory capacity

Education and/or Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent is required
  • Three (3) years of experience, including the following:

    • Experience in all areas described under Position Duties
    • Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems administration
    • Direct user support, for a wide variety of software, hardware, and network issues
    • Supporting end user requests via helpdesk tickets and walk-in interactions
    • Performing routine changes and updates to desktops, servers, and network infrastructure components

  • An equivalent combination of education and direct federal experience may be acceptable

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to support physical scientists in their use of IT to solve research problems.
  • Awareness of IT Security concepts and best practices
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Desire and ability to stay current in IT domain
  • Desire and ability to learn and quickly apply/integrate new techniques, tools, concepts
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills; both oral and written
  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and federal background check

Work Environment:

  • Federal office building, some moderate lifting; work from currently due to COVID.
