Job Summary: Supports the Pharmacist's activities, including order processing, preparation of general and specialty medication (Chemotherapy, TPN and Cardiac Preps) IV solutions, syringes, admixtures and/or non- IV doses. Processes floor stock orders, maintains medication inventories, answers the phones providing excellent customer support, removes outdated medication, and provides medication deliveries for the Inpatient Pharmacy.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Registered in the State of Florida as a Pharmacy Technician - active and in good standing throughout employment
General and Specialty (Chemotherapy, TPN and Cardiac IV) admixture preparation experience or training for inpatient pharmacy
5 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician required
3 years of advanced hospital practice experience
National Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (PTCB) - active and in good standing throughout employment
Job Specific Duties:
Answers the phone according to departmental standards and directs calls as appropriate using excellent customer service.
Updates and maintains schedule for Pharmacy Technicians while minimizing overtime for Pharmacy department 24/7 hour operation and coverage.
Onboards, provides departmental orientation, assigns tasks and follows up with volunteers.
Assists with control substance audits weekly under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist per hospital policy and procedures.
Performs bacterial testing to ensure infection control practices are meeting and exceeding standards as outlined in departmental policy for the IV room.
Assists with payroll, makes edits as needed for the Technicians in a timely manner.
Maintain various assignments for technicians; including cleaning assignments, workflow assignments with regular pharmacy and the IV room, and training assignments for precepting new hires.
Accountable for the recruiting, selection, and evaluation of technician staff; provides input on hiring decisions.
Accountable for building team engagement with huddles, and conducts team meetings to communicate essential information.
Prepares and delivers medications per hospital standards in a timely manner to the designated nursing units and picks up returned medications.
Maintains active participation in Lean committee initiatives.
Completes periodic area inspections in a timely manner as assigned for removal of outdated medications prior to expiration of medication.
Receives daily shipments of medications from vendors and warehouse; accurately reports medication barcodes into the designated computer system.
Assists in stocking and maintaining the store room; ensures store room is clean and organized.
Prepares medications accurately and efficiently for individual patient use from stock and bulk supply.
Accurately and efficiently prepares standardized doses of medication including unit dose and cassette fill for patient use.
Prepares specific IV mixtures syringes and large volume IV medications accurately and efficiently using proper USP 797 aseptic technique.
Responsible for accurately preparing Parenteral Nutrition (PN), Chemotherapy, OR and Cardiovascular Trays.
Accurately weighs, counts, and measures medications; labels patient specific medications; and places the finished product in a suitable container for pharmacist check.
Responsible for responding to equipment alerts and maintaining the automated dispensing machines and other routine equipment in the Pharmacy and in the hospital.
Common Duties:
Maintains accountability by ensuring compliance thru timely completion of licensures, certifications, all competencies, health requirements (PPD, N95, Flu, etc.), and education requirements.
Maintains accountability and timekeeping expectations as outlined by MCHS Timekeeping and Attendance policy and procedures. Ensures behavior is compliant with communication standards.
Ensures behavior meets and/or exceeds targeted service scores as measured by the Service Index and/or the internal departmental service survey.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
High School education or equivalent preferred
Knowledge and skills in IV admixture and Unit Dose medication preparation for inpatient pharmacy or bulk dispensing for outpatient pharmacy preferred
Ability to comprehend and analyze information, knowledge of percentage and basic math calculations
Ability to coordinate the sequence of a process
Ability to relate cooperatively, courteously and constructively with patients, nursing personnel, coworkers, physicians, etc.
Knowledge of metric system of measurement
Knowledge of, and skilled in, medication preparation and dispensing for an outpatient pharmacy
Knowledge of generic and brand medication names
Able to communicate effectively with the public and internal customers
