Job Description:

The qualified candidate must have VA SAR / VA LAPP underwriting certifications and/or Direct Endorsement (DE) FHA underwriting certification. Incumbent will underwrite and apply necessary conditions to ensure the borrower meets program specifications for the firm's Affordable Lending products including but not limited to VA/FHA loans. You will be responsible for the analysis of submitted files for repayment capacity, capital/assets, character, collateral and property condition, while adhering to Chase credit policies and investor/agency guidelines.

VA / FHA Underwriters will have higher lending authority and may assist as needed with second reviews, group huddles or with shadowing/training opportunities for other team members. Underwriters support and uphold fair lending practices of JPMorgan Chase, and are responsible for productivity targets ensuring the highest quality and level of customer satisfaction.

The underwriter will review and analyze highly complex customer financial documentation, handle specialty or high risk loans/files, and propose solutions to assist customers in obtaining and/or retaining homeownership. The staff members may interact with other internal and external parties such as Customer Assistant Specialists, Loan Processors, and Quality Assurance, Closers and investors or government agencies as needed.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (in order of importance)

Analyzes extremely complex, diversified credit and property documentation including complex low-to-moderate income loans, multi-layer loans, and multiple sources of income loans, working with various entities such as FHA, HUD 184, VA and Housing Finance Agencies. Tracks pipeline details and is able to work independently without direct supervision. Approves loans with in designated lending limits.

Impacts productivity and profitability of Mortgage Banking by the significant level of decision-making required, as the volume of closed loans is directly determined by the timeliness, quality and compliance of the loan approval/underwriting function.

Protects the bank's profits by evaluating risk and/or fraud exposure. Reconciles findings with published guidelines to address/resolve variances and identify relevant compensating factors evident in the loan file, and communicates findings.

Resolves adverse investor, quality control, and/or audit findings and clears discrepancies within authority, ensuring loan files' compliance with investor and insurers' guidelines, federal regulations and bank policy. Recommends alternative loan products/counter-offers.

Maintains awareness of changing economic conditions, new trends and developments in the local and national real estate and insured mortgage markets; and maintains current knowledge of existing laws, statutes, regulations, ordinances and policies & procedures pertaining to real estate and mortgage lending.

Applies knowledge of mortgage servicing process and/or Chase credit underwriting guidelines.

Adheres to all Chase Fair Lending practices

Demonstrates high proficiency in the review of loan underwriting and modifications documentation to ensure compliance with investor requirements (e.g. loan documents, appraisals, etc)

Demonstrates proficiency in analyzing extremely complex financial information including calculation of income and debt ratios, verification of assets, collateral review and credit review.

Keep up to date on all credit policy changes that impact underwriting

Highly developed verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent teamwork with internal employees and external customers/business partners.

Knowledge and Experience

College degree in business and/or equivalent work experience preferred

Minimum of 5 years' experience as residential mortgage underwriter

Must have FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and/or VA SAR/LAPP certification

Expert knowledge of complex personal and business financial analysis and an expertise in tax return, balance sheet analysis including cash flow and self-employment income analysis.

Knowledge and proficiency in all levels of mortgage underwriting including Conventional, Government, Jumbo and Super Jumbo mortgage lending preferred.

Thorough knowledge of Mortgage Insurance policies

Excellent analytical and decision making skills

Ability to work independently with little supervision
