Student Success Coordinator

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Student Success Coordinator in the Student Success Center within CHHS is part of a collaborative developing SSC Leadership Team that promotes student success across the CHHS student life cycle.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Success, the Student Success Coordinator serves as the primary leader for student engagement and student development efforts throughout the Student Success Center.

Through collaboration with the professional advising staff, the Assistant Dean for Student Success and the Assistant Director for Academic Advising, the Student Success Coordinator ensures that students receive a high-quality student experience that leads to student successfully achieving their academic and career goals.

Moreover, the Coordinator collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Student Success and the Assistant Director for Academic Advising to ensure that the comprehensive programming and services throughout the Center are well executed and supported in alignment with the CHHS and SSC strategic plan.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Applicants must:

Hold a master's degree in higher education or related area OR hold a master's degree with at least 3 years of related work experience within a university or college setting.


  • Have a minimum of 4 years of related work experience in the areas of student programming and/or event development, planning, and management.

  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrate effective judgment and professional integrity.

  • Manage time effectively in a busy environment.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to and execution of customer service.

  • Have experience with and a passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Have proven abilities to prioritize and handle multiple deadlines and projects in the midst of changing priorities.

  • Effectively utilize and learn various advising and software applications, learning platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, and technology-based delivery systems.

  • Have experience in creating, implementing and leading student programming (i.e. summer camps, retention and recruitment initiatives).

  • Be knowledgeable of best practices around student engagement, programming and student services for student pursuing health and human services positions, as well as, all relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Preference will be given to applicants who have:


  • Demonstrated experience of effectively working in a matrix organization

  • Experience with planning and coordinating student support services and programs, working positively and effectively as a contributing member of a team

  • Possess a proven track record of communicating and creating programs for a diverse student population

  • Demonstrated experiences of supervising a team of students (graduate/undergraduate/temporary employees) in a collegiate environment

  • Demonstrated skill in exceptional organizational and time management

  • Demonstrated experience in effective project and/or program management

  • Demonstrated skill in exceptional communication with on campus constituencies (e.g., staff, faculty, students, managers, etc.)

  • Experience leading student retention and persistence initiatives


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is an interdisciplinary and integrated academic unit that includes three professional schools: the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences. The CHHS has a permanent operating budget of approximately $22M, over 200 permanent employees, and over 4,600 students.

The Student Success Center (SSC) in CHHS works to develop and provide programs and services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience and position students for success as they continue in their chosen career paths.

The Center houses caring individuals who are passionate about and dedicated to helping students identify and achieve their educational and career goals.

The Student Success Center works collaboratively with other units across campus (e.g., the Career Center, University College, etc.) to:

  • Provide academic advising

  • Support program recruitment and admissions

  • Provide major, career, and graduate school guidance

  • Perform student assessment, monitoring, and reporting

  • Develop other services and programs that will foster student and alumni success.


  • The Student Success Center acts as an "accelerator network" and supports campus wide and college services and programs, and thus Student Success Professionals must possess the skill-sets, ability and flexibility to be successful in a changing, fast-paced academic environment.

    The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application.
